Influence of negative self-perceptions of aging, among other variables, on the feeling of loneliness or anguish during confinement

The article titled “We're staying at home”. Association of self-perceptions of aging, personal and family resources and loneliness with psychological distress during the lock-down period of COVID-19. It has been carried out by professors Andrés Losada-Baltar, Lucía Jiménez-Gonzálo, María del Sequeros Pedroso-Chaparro and Jose Fernandes-Pires, all of them professors and researchers of the Department of Psychology of the FCS. In addition, the professors, Laura Gallego-Alberto and María Márquez-González, both from the Department of Biological and Health Psychology of the Autonomous University of Madrid, have participated in the research. 

The manuscript, which you can access in full text by clicking hereinvestigate how Negative self-perceptions of aging, among other personal and relational variables, may be associated with loneliness and distress caused by this pandemic crisis. For that, 1310 people participated of Spanish nationality (with an age range between 18 and 88 years) who were confined to their home. In addition to specific questions about COVID-19 risk, self-perceptions of aging, family and personal resources, loneliness, and psychological distress were measured.

According to results of the study, yesBeing a woman, younger, having negative self-perceptions about aging, being exposed to news about COVID-19 for more time, having more contact with relatives other than those with whom they live, fewer positive emotions, less perceived self-efficacy, lower quality of sleep, older expressed emotion and greater loneliness were associated with greater distress.

On the other hand, being a woman, younger, having negative self-perceptions about aging, more time exposed to news about COVID-19, less contact with relatives, greater self-perception of responsibility or burdens, fewer positive emotions, fewer resources for entertainment, less Sleep quality and greater expressed emotion were associated with greater loneliness.
