Medical students of the FCS collaborate as clinical assistants in the Fundación Instituto San José

Posted by FMR

It is a Hospital specialized in Neurological and Traumatological Rehabilitation, a benchmark in Palliative Care, located in the Cuatro Vientos area

After the suspension of face-to-face teaching activities, a large number of students went to their university hospitals offering to collaborate in the tasks that could be conferred on them. To respond to the request of the students, Dr. Carlos Guijarro, coordinator of the clinical practices of the 6th year of the Degree in Medicine of the URJC, elaborated a voluntary questionnaire on the options of collaboration, completely voluntary, in accordance with the indications of the Dean of the FCS Carmen Gallardo and the Coordinator of the Degree Teresa Fernández Agulló.

A total of 65 students corresponding to the university hospitals of Alcorcón (22 students), Fuenlabrada (20 students), Móstoles (13 students) and Rey Juan Carlos (10 students) responded to the questionnaire. Most showed availability to attend morning or afternoon shifts and on holidays. However, the situation in hospitals due to COVID-19 did not favor the direct involvement of students, with one notable exception. The Managing Director of the San José Clinic Foundation (Dr. Ricardo Sanchis Cienfuegos-Jovellanos) requested the collaboration of 6th-year Medicine students to support the medical team, decimated by the COVID-19 epidemic. Dr. Guijarro extended the aforementioned survey, and between 22.00:24.00 p.m. and 30:30 a.m. on March 4, the San José Foundation received a list of more than XNUMX students who voluntarily volunteered to collaborate. Finally, the San José Institute has incorporated a total of XNUMX 'medical assistants' since the beginning of April to support the Institution's medical team.

We would like to thank our students for demonstrating their dedication to public service. The experience they will live will serve to further improve their commitment to society and to the sick.
