Challenges of the journalistic profession in the face of political corruption in the age of disinformation

Written by COMMUNITYMANAGER, COMMUNICATION

Political corruption scandals have been very frequent in the media in recent decades in Spain. In current times, a huge amount of information circulates on this subject, thanks especially to the Internet and social networks. In many cases, faced with this informative tsunami, it is very difficult to discern to what extent the available information is really truthful.

This conference Challenges of the journalistic profession in the face of political corruption in the era of disinformation tries to present what are the greatest challenges that current journalism faces when it comes to covering information on corruption.

The presentations will be given by Homero Gil de Zúñiga (Universities of Salamanca, Pennsylvania and Diego Portales) and Juan Luis López-Galiacho (Rey Juan Carlos University). Among the topics to be discussed, they will discuss the role of investigative journalism as a supervisor and fourth power in corruption cases, the lack of transparency that many media outlets have regarding their ownership, a factor that may become relevant at the time to choose what topics they cover; as well as the role of social networks, fake news and polarization in changes in political attitudes.
