The experience of University Hospitals

Posted by FMR

The University Hospitals of the Community of Madrid work hard to fight against the COVID-19 infection.

At the beginning of March, hospitals began to apply preventive measures and from mid-March, specific activities were suspended with the aim of dedicating all efforts to the fight against the Coronavirus.

All hospital professionals have put aside their specialties and usual tasks to combat this virus that is causing so much damage. Doctors do not carry out their specific activities, but are grouped into medical teams to care for patients with COVID-19 in the emergency room and on hospital floors. Nursing staff, under great emotional pressure, work seven days a week and organize shifts with a high intensity of work to attend to admitted patients on all possible fronts. Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists put aside their usual occupation and collaborate in the classification and triage of patients, in support tasks for the transformation of hospitalization units or in the design of physical activity and health education programs for discharged patients . On the other hand, health professionals are carrying out telephone monitoring, as well as psychological care, of the relatives of hospitalized patients, an activity of extreme delicacy, given the uncertainty that this disease entails. Likewise, they carry out a meticulous follow-up of discharged patients and maintain some consultations through telematic means. Nursing assistants, warders, cleaning staff, housekeepers, kitchen staff, security, technical and computer service, all are united with the purpose of maintaining the proper functioning of hospitals and even to medicalize nearby hotels. Everyone is involved in the fight against the virus, regardless of the risk to their health and in the face of a situation that changes every day, and that makes them reinvent themselves. or having to expand through different areas of the hospitals.

For all this, we must thank and recognize their work, express the pride we feel for their work and tell them, cheer up, you are the best and we trust you. Thanks to all the linked and associated university professors of the Faculty and to all the internship tutors, who in the first or second line, are working without giving up. Thanks to all the health and non-health professionals at our university hospitals, who, regardless of their role, are fighting to make health care work.

More than applause, you deserve smiles, hugs and kisses, you deserve life to thank you. Do not worry, it will be so, because we will say it in all our classes, because we will remind our future students, who will also be yours, that you are heroes and that you were our light.
