INTERUNIVERSITY PROGRAM FOR SENIORS 2025
The Ministry of Family, Youth and Social Affairs, through the General Directorate of Care for the Elderly and Dependency, and the Madrid public universities of Alcalá, Carlos III and Rey Juan Carlos develop the Interuniversity Program for Seniors. It is intended for older people 55 who have completed or are currently enrolled in the General Program “University for Seniors” at one of Madrid’s public universities.
General information on the interuniversity program 2st semester 2025
Offer of URJC seminars
THE POWER AND STRENGTH OF WORDS Professor Fernando Vilches.
"Since the beginning of time," Dr. Juan Casado tells us in his book "Memories and Confessions of Fifty Years of Pediatrics," "it has been known that there have always been healers who healed through empathy, trust in gestures, chants, and words that even bring about miracles." This interuniversity seminar is about the latter: the power of words that we have forgotten. We see it in the same vein as El fuego invisible, a Planeta Prize winner by writer Javier Sierra: "We often forget the power of words." With them, we love, but we also provoke the anger of others and even death. Faced with their thaumaturgical power, we find the apotheosis of the neutral, the politically correct language that seeks to distort the use of that language by stripping it of its history of meaning so deeply rooted in human beings. If, as Aristotle said, human beings are the only animals with words, they are worth studying, understanding, respecting, and loving. In this seminar, we will discuss words and their manipulation, and above all, their beneficial power.
DATE AND TIME: October 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE BRAIN: NEUROSCIENCE APPLIED TO WELL-BEING AND MENTAL HEALTH Teacher: Margarita Cígarán.
Did you know that your brain continues to change and learn throughout your life? This course is an invitation to discover the secrets of this fascinating organ that allows us to think, feel, remember, and enjoy. Through a close and engaging approach, we'll explore how modern neuroscience helps us better understand our minds and care for them with small, everyday gestures.
Over ten hours of learning and reflection, we'll delve into the mysteries of the brain: how memories are formed, why we feel the way we do, which habits strengthen our mental abilities, and how we can stay mentally active and emotionally balanced. We'll also learn surprising facts, such as why the brain consumes so much energy, how music influences our emotions, and what happens in our minds when we dream.
Today's science offers us valuable tools to improve our quality of life. Recent research highlights the role of nutrition, exercise, social relationships, and cognitive stimulation as fundamental pillars for preserving brain health. Furthermore, concepts such as neuroplasticity and integrative well-being show us that it's never too late to learn, adapt, and flourish.
This course will not only provide you with knowledge, but also inspiration to live with greater awareness, curiosity, and well-being. Because caring for your mind is also a way of caring for your life.
DATE AND TIMES: October 23 and 30, November 7, 14, and 21, 2025, from 12:00 to 14:00 p.m.

PIONEERS: EXTRAORDINARY SPANISH WOMEN IN THE 20TH CENTURY. Prof. Matilde Eiroa San Francisco.
The course showcases the key women who, throughout the 20th century, have paved the way in their respective professions and activities, breaking barriers and challenging conventions. We will consider those who, in the political, scientific, artistic, cultural, or media spheres, have made fundamental contributions to the development of society.
These women acted within a defined context, which largely explains their contribution. We will therefore analyze these pioneers within a historical framework, highlighting the trends they followed and the generations they formed. We will begin with a background discussion of the pioneers of the 19th century, primarily those prominent in the world of literature and journalism, before focusing more closely on the 20th century, where we find politicians, artists, diplomats, athletes, and scientists, among the most significant professions, but not the only ones. The origin and development of Spanish feminism will also be discussed.
We will also discover that these are profiles of women who inspired profound social change, whose legacy reflects the achievements made as a result of individual and collective work, perseverance, courage, and intelligence in an environment of freedom.
DATE AND TIME: October 29, 30, and November 3, 4, and 5, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
THE GREAT SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES Professor Fernando Gil Gonzalez.
This seminar offers a general overview of the most significant scientific discoveries, from prehistory, with the origin of fire, to the 21st century. It covers essential topics such as understanding Galileo as the father of modern science and Newton as the creator of the scientific method. This course will also explore the role of Marie Curie, the driving force behind radioactivity, and other fundamental topics such as the study of DNA and the use of artificial intelligence as a tool to understand how technology affects us today.
DATE AND TIME: November 3, 6, 10, 13 and 17, 2025, from 12:00 to 14:00.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14.
PHOTOGRAPHY, ART AND TECHNOLOGY Professor Jorge Latorre.
Can there be photography in the age of AI, when everything is constructed outside of reality? Can we speak of photographic art, or even art, in this context? Based on a review of the history of photography in relation to the visual arts and an analysis of various historiographical milestones on the controversial topic of photographic art, this article proposes some key questions that technologically differentiated photography from painting, drawing, or printmaking, and made it especially suitable for artistic expression in modernity. We will also examine the revolutionary changes introduced by AI photography, which can no longer be distinguished in any way from painting and other arts of representation (without recording) of reality. The implicit proposal is that the debate about whether photography is art, or about what type of photography is artistic and what other types are not, is not as important as analyzing the very fact of "the photographic" in the contemporary art scene, and the enormous consequences it has had and continues to have for reflection on human creativity in relation to the image we have of the reality of our time.
DATE AND TIME: November 6, 10, 13, 17, and 18, 2025, from 18:00 p.m. to 20:00 p.m.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
GUERRILLAS AND STATE TERRORISM IN LATIN AMERICA Professor Jerónimo Ríos Sierra.
The following course attempts to present and analyze the explanatory elements that gave rise to the Latin American guerrilla phenomenon during the Cold War. It also attempts to understand the strategies and responses of the region's governments in a context of great turmoil resulting from the geopolitical situation at the time and the rise of authoritarianism. The course begins by presenting the unique characteristics of the Latin American continent in the mid-60th century to understand the logic of existing revolutionary thought and the impact of the Cuban Revolution. It then addresses the three waves of guerrilla warfare, each with shared elements and distinct characteristics. In this regard, we will explore the foundations of rural guerrilla warfare, which attempts to emulate the Cuban experience; the different approach emerging from urban guerrilla movements in the Southern Cone; and the substantial transformations that occurred after the Nicaraguan revolution, with a particular impact in the Andean region. Special attention will be paid to the cases of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile. After studying the revolutionary transnational flows during the 70s and 70s, and the decline of the guerrilla movements, the responses deployed by the governments of the time, the influence of the United States in this regard and, likewise, the counterinsurgency policies that, since the late XNUMXs, are aligned with the guerrilla movement will be analyzed. National Security Doctrine. In fact, in relation to the above, in many cases, such as Colombia, Peru, or the Southern Cone, practices similar to state terrorism will end up being incurred, which equally warrants reflection.
DATE AND TIME: November 12, 13, 17, 18, and 21, 2025, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
