General information on the interuniversity program 1st semester 2025
Offer of URJC seminars
MILESTONES OF TODAY'S SOCIETY: ISLAMIC INTEGRITY, DEMOGRAPHIC REVOLUTION AND SOCIAL PROGRESS. Prof: José Manuel Azcona Pastor.
This course will study the iconic and structural elements of society in the Western world between 1990 and 2025. It will deal with the identity milestones of what we have defined as the current demographic revolution with the major socioeconomic transformations that it implies. Migratory phenomena, the fall in birth rates and population changes will be the subject of analysis.
Another phenomenon inherent to our current society, namely jihadist political violence and Islamic terrorism, will also be discussed from a historical-political perspective. The phenomenon of Wahhabism, the significance of the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State or Hezbollah, the Party of God and other terrorist groups will be discussed from the perspective of what their existence means for the Western world.
We will also discuss the concept of social progress and its evolution throughout history as the backbone of modern societies and the debate inherent to the aforementioned concept and model.
DATE AND TIME: March 12 and 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 13:00 p.m. and March 19 and 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
TERRORISM AND ITS EVOLUTION IN INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY: VIOLENCE AND MULTIDIMENSIONAL COMBAT Professor: Sagrario Moran Blanco.
Terrorism is a phenomenon that has been present in international society since the end of the 19th century and has been in constant evolution and change with the consequent repercussions in the societies in which it has acted, becoming one of the main threats to international peace, stability and security. This course will explain: first, the evolution experienced by the phenomenon from the anarchist terrorism of the late 19th century to current jihadist terrorism, without forgetting the violent local groups that terrorized the societies of several European countries during the last three decades of the 20th century. Second, the role played by the media in the actions of the different terrorist groups will be explained and, third, the political-legal measures applied by the governments affected by the phenomenon will be analyzed, as well as by international organizations such as the United Nations or the European Union. In fact, this course aims to explain how the new dynamics generated by the changes experienced by terrorist groups have brought with them the emergence of new policies and legal instruments aimed at combating and weakening them.
DATE AND TIME: March 13, 20, 27; April 3 and 10, 2025, from 16:00 p.m. to 18:00 p.m.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
FROM SPANISH ITALY TO CONTEMPORARY ITALY. Professor: Matteo Re.
This course will explore the evolution of Italy from the Spanish period to the present day, with a particular focus on the modern vision of the country and its historical, political and cultural development.
We will begin with an introductory class covering the Spanish period, the unification of Italy and the fascist ventennio. We will then delve into specific topics related to politics, society and culture. Special attention will be paid to artistic manifestations such as cinema, music and art.
We will also examine the years of terrorism, analysing how Italy managed to overcome that dark period and project itself into the 1980s, marked by hedonism. From there, we will address the creation of new political parties in the early 1990s until reaching the executive led by Giorgia Meloni.
Throughout the course, the social and cultural changes that have accompanied these historical processes will also be analyzed, offering a comprehensive view of the evolution of Italy.
DATE AND TIME: March 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 2025, from 18:00 p.m. to 20:00 p.m.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
ETHICS AND HUMAN RIGHTS Professor: Cristina Hermida del Llano
This seminar will allow you to delve into the world of Ethics and Human Rights from different perspectives (historical, philosophical and legal), trying to explore what ethics consists of, what the difference is between personal ethics and social ethics, what type of ethics we embrace in the 21st century or to what extent it supports current positive law.
It will also be possible to reflect on the genesis of human rights, their characteristics and differences with respect to fundamental rights, which will also be examined, looking at their application at the national and international level.
Throughout the five sessions, which will combine a rigorous scientific approach with a popular approach, we will be able to debate fundamental issues that affect us in our daily lives. To do so, we will use the Socratic methodology (posing questions that invite group reflection), as well as interactive presentations designed for an audience not necessarily specialized in the subject, but with intellectual concerns in this field of study.
DATE AND TIME: April 3, 4, 8, 9 and 10, 2025, from 12:00 to 14:00
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
FLYING, FROM DREAM TO EVERYDAY REALITY. Professor: Mr. Žarko Sivčev
Have you ever dreamed of flying? You spread your arms and take off, above your house, the sea, the mountains... You, above everything!
The title of this seminar is “Flying, from dream to everyday reality”. In ten hours we will go through the history of aviation, especially civil aviation, through economic, administrative, political and social events. A relatively young history, which is just over 120 years old. A history in which our generation witnessed great and surprising achievements in aviation: jet aircraft, supersonic flights, aircraft capable of carrying more than 500 passengers, plane tickets for 1 euro cent… From an aviation reserved for a privileged few to an aviation accessible to all. The most important question for the future of aviation: how to ensure the development of sustainable aviation in the sustainable world of tomorrow?
DATE AND TIME: March 25, 27, 28 and April 1, 2, 2025, from 12:00 to 14:00
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
REALITY AND TRUTH: A PHILOSOPHICAL INTRODUCTION TO THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICS AND LOGIC Prof. Jose Alejandro Fernandez Cuesta.
The aim of this course is to address the relationship between contemporary philosophy and some of its main open problems (especially focusing on the problem of knowledge, truth and reality) and quantum physics that emerged from the 20th century. We will deal thematically and without presupposing any prior knowledge, with the changes that have arisen in philosophy (specifically in formal logic) since the end of the 19th century, taking into account the break with certain classical theses, and we will introduce, thematically, some of the main results of quantum mechanics from scratch. In the course we will analyze how both results raised new philosophical problems with repercussions in different fields that have had repercussions, up to the present, in areas as apparently distant as linguistics, philosophy, computer science or mathematics.
During the 20th century, numerous interpretations have been developed to provide a philosophical foundation for the aforementioned results of quantum mechanics. One of these, which gave rise to quantum computing, focused on the formalism used, opening up a new research topic halfway between physics, mathematics, computing and philosophy: the so-called “quantum logic” problem (focused on addressing whether or not quantum mechanics required a “change of logic” and what this could mean). We will address this problem from a purely philosophical perspective, addressing the main arguments in its favor and its main criticisms.
DATE AND TIME: Monday 10 March from 18:00 p.m. to 20:00 p.m., 17 March from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., 24 and 31 March and 7 April from 18:00 p.m. to 20:00 p.m.
PLACE: Madrid Campus. Manuel Becerra Square, 14
