The URJC has recently held the 'Science à la carte' conference in which 2nd year high school students from Community of Madrid have participated. The initiative has taken place on the Móstoles campus and has been organized by the School of Experimental Sciences and Technology (ESCET).

With these conferences, the URJC intends to promote the increase of vocations in studies in experimental and technological sciences. It has been a great experience for the 2nd year high school students, since it leads to learning, motivation and curiosity of young people. During these days they are the scientists, so they can observe first-hand the entire area in which great experiments are carried out, from handling the various instruments, to getting to know the various work areas.

Due to the great variety of degrees that ESCET offers: Industrial Technology Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biology, Food Science and Technology, Experimental Sciences, or Chemical Engineering, among others, 'Science on Demand' has had the participation of many teachers and researchers who have gone to great lengths to explain their disciplines to young people.

In 'Science à la Carte', students could choose the area that most caught their attention and carry out the same procedures that scientists carry out. Different workshops and programmed activities have been carried out for more than 140 students in the 2nd year of high school, with titles such as 'How an industrial robot works', 'Magnetic resonance and electron microscopy', 'The anticipation of climate change' or 'Plastics from potato, corn and wheat.

"Scientific activities and technologies are not boring, on the contrary, it is a world of experiences, and it is a great opportunity for students to choose the activity that they like the most and want to do", said José Manuel González, director of the conference and professor at ESCET.

The students have participated extensively in the practice of the different workshops, which have been a success, both due to the participation of the 2nd year high school students, and due to the passion of the scientists when carrying out the activities.

Science a la carte, activities that motivate technological-scientific studies

The 'Science à la Carta' initiative promotes awakening the interest of young people in technological and scientific careers. Given the various branches of ESCET, there has been a wide range of activities, in which it has been observed how students were amazed by the various techniques. Within the framework of these conferences, the 2nd year high school students have also had the opportunity to learn about different scientific teams from the URJC, from the wastewater treatment plant, the renewable energy unit, the chemical engineering plant and various facilities , all of them in the Technological Support Center of the Móstoles campus of the URJC. '

'Ciencia a la Carta' is an initiative of the UCC+i, the ESCET and the Vice-Rectorate for Research, and has been made possible thanks to the "Help for the Promotion of Scientific, Technological and Innovation Culture" program of the Fundación Spanish for Science and Technology (FECYT, FCT-17-11896), dependent on the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
