Madrid bars are filled with science with 'Pint Of Science 2019'

The Rey Juan Carlos University has been participating since 2016 in this international scientific outreach event thanks to the involvement of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit. It will take place on May 20, 21 and 22 in different bars in the city center.

Next week, specifically on May 20,21, 22 and XNUMX, this year's edition of the festival starts  'Pint of Science' which, once again, has the collaboration of scientists and researchers from the Rey Juan Carlos University. This festival aims, with an aim of accessible scientific dissemination, to offer interesting and fun talks on the latest scientific research, in an accessible format for the public and offering a platform that allows attendees to discuss research with the people who carry it out. finished.

The  proposed activities They will take place completely free of charge in six well-known bars in Madrid (Moe Club, Café Manuela, Cuatro Gatos Music Café, Chinaski Lavapiés, Los Grifos Craft Beers and La Tapa). These venues will host a total of 45 talks by scientists from leading universities and research centers in the community, including several members of the Rey Juan Carlos University.

This year, there are six themes to be developed:

  • Beautiful Mind: Neurosciences, psychology, psychiatry
  • From Atoms to Galaxies: Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Astronomy
  • Our Body: Human Biology and Health
  • Planet Earth: Earth Sciences, Evolution, Zoology
  • Tech me out!: Technology and computers
  • Our Society: Law, history, politics

Regarding the participation of the URJC, the seven representatives of the university will offer a variety of presentations focused on current scientific topics of notable relevance: 'Fuchsia pain and yellow pleasure' by Helena Melero, 'Realities and myths of deforestation by naval construction' by Koldo Trápaga, 'Forbidden to prohibit. Fake regulations?' by Jorge Jiménez, 'Some false news has leaked to you... and you know it' by Juan Romero, 'Transforming the prison through Basic Income' by Carlos Fernández, 'Rediscovering the past: new technologies and heritage' by Félix Labrado and 'The expeditions Scientists to the Tropics 250 Years After the Birth of Humboldt' by Humberto Martín.

'Pint of Science' is an international festival and is held in 272 cities in 20 countries in Europe, Asia, America and Oceania, with Spain being one of the main participating countries for the quality and volume of its activities. This edition will take place in 73 Spanish cities and will allow 748 scientists to give different talks on scientific news in bars throughout the national territory.

For its part, the organization in Madrid collaborates with the Padre Piquer Training Center, the Autonomous University of Madrid and is sponsored by Jovenes Nucleares (Spanish Nuclear Society). The participation of the Rey Juan Carlos University in this event, since 2016, is promoted and coordinated by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+i) dependent on the Vice President for Research.
