Professor Laureano Escudero receives the SEIO medal

The URJC professor collected this award during the award ceremony for the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Statistics and Research Awards, whose events were postponed as a result of the pandemic.

The Spanish Society for Statistics and Operational Research (SEIO), in collaboration with the BBVA Foundation, has awarded the Statistics and Research Awards for its last two editions. During the ceremony, he has also awarded his Medals awards to distinguished researchers, in recognition of their exceptional academic careers in the fields of Statistics and Operations Research. In the 2020 edition, this recognition was awarded to Professor Laureano F. Escudero, professor at the Rey Juan Carlos University, and it was given to him during the recent event.

Professor Escudero has been a professor in the Department of Statistics and Research-Operations between 2008 and 2013, until his retirement. Currently, he continues to actively collaborate in research as an honorary collaborator of the URJC with dozens of articles published over the years.

Laureano Escudero has extensive experience as a teacher and researcher. He has a doctorate in Economic Sciences from the Commercial University of Deusto (Bilbao, 1974) and a degree in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1972). He has been a professor of Mathematical Statistics and Decision Theory at the Faculty of Computer Science of the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1974-1977), associate professor type IV in the Department of Statistics and Operational Research of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of the Complutense University Madrid (1992-2000) and professor in the Department of Statistics and Operational Research at the Miguel Hernández Elche University (Alicante, 2000-2007). In addition, he has directed 12 doctoral theses in Mathematical Optimization, is the author of 5 books and co-author of another, and has published more than 150 scientific articles in prestigious journals, most of them leaders in JCR indexing.

In 1987, the Ministry of Defense awarded him the Aeronautical Merit Cross with White Distinction, First Class, for his work in the field of Mathematical Optimization as an honorary collaborator of the ministry.

In the business field, he has held various management positions in the Iberdrola Group, being the director of the Decision Support Systems Engineering department (Artificial Intelligence and Mathematical Optimization systems) in the Iberdrola Engineering and Consulting division.

An international trajectory

During the period 2003-04, Laureano Escudero was president of the EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies), being the first Spaniard to hold this position, and has the EURO golden pin (2007)

Professor Escudero has been Visiting Scholar at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) of Pittsburgh (United States, 2014) and in the Northeastern University (NEU) of Shenyang (China, 2018). He has worked at IBM Research, Scientific and Development Centers in Madrid, Palo Alto (California), Sindelfingen (Germany) and TJ Watson Research Center (Yorktown Heights, New York), 1972-1991, in the area of ​​Mathematical Optimization. In 1987 he was appointed a member of the New York Academy of Sciences.
