The student of the double Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and Primary Education has won 5 medals in the Spanish Championship in Adapted Cycling Track, held on September 17 and 18.

Effort and sacrifice are two of the key components for success, whether in sports or academics. Jaime Andrés Mariño knows it well, that he has been competing at the highest level for more than three years, combining sport with his university education.

Since 2019, Mariño has competed in the Spanish Track Championship for the Madrid team, where he already won six medals last year. On this occasion, he has achieved 5; 2 silver, in the 1 kilometer and team speed tests, and 3 bronze, in individual pursuit, Scratch and Omnium.

"I am very happy, because despite not having much time to train this year, I have been able to celebrate my birthday enjoying my fans and win medals in all the events I have competed in," says Mariño.

The truth is that, to be able to do these two activities, “you have to dedicate a lot of effort to both things” says Mariño. “In the end, I think it's a matter of being well organized and taking advantage of time. This year I have dedicated myself more to studying, but I continue with my habits from when I trained four hours a day; I get up around 5:30 and go to bed at 10.

In addition, Mariño acknowledges that studying his career also has its advantages, since "applying the knowledge I have learned in university classes, plus what I receive from various coaches and on my own, I become very aware of my ability and I think that I can improve my marks a lot in several tests”.

When asked about his goals, both in the university and in sports, he states that he wants to “prepare well for the speed tests because I wasn't happy with the times I got in these Nationals”. Academically, "I would like to dedicate myself to sports management in some national and international organization and be able to organize events of this sport that I am so passionate about," he adds.

Likewise, Mariño wanted to point out “the good atmosphere in the team, both riders and the coaching staff are geniuses. This year I think we were the team with the most medals in the entire Championship. I am very grateful to be a part of it.”

Finally, the young cyclist thanked "the support received by the URJC community, both from teachers and students, and I encourage the University to have a cycling club that promotes this sport."
