On October 27, Isabel Dolores Benito Díaz, graduated in Law and Criminology from the URJC, received the prize of the XIV "Enrique Ruano Casanova" Contest for Human Rights, in the student modality. The event took place at 19:00 p.m. at the Law School of the Complutense University of Madrid.

The award-winning work is entitled "Criminal response to the problem of trafficking in human beings for the purpose of sexual and labor exploitation in Spain. A critical approach”. Isabel Benito herself summarizes the main objective of her proposal, which is "to study and formulate a series of proposals in relation to the Crime of trafficking in human beings to analyze how the Spanish legal system is adjusted in this area" .

According to Benito, the issue of trafficking in human beings is characterized by being a hidden and little-detected criminal phenomenon, "which is why I found that there were hardly any unified data and statistics." However, the development of the work has allowed several conclusions to be reached; the need to identify the victims, the importance of reinforcing the prosecution of the crime of prostitution and the obligation to educate and make society aware that prostitution hides, in most cases, trafficking and exploitation.

The trajectory and work of Isabel Benito have contributed to receiving this recognition. The student He has been a student representative in the Department of Public Law II, where he learned "how it works and how to deal with the public administration, as well as helping and getting to know other students."

On the other hand, Benito obtained a collaboration scholarship in the same Department last year, which allowed him to work on this project and organize a presentation on trafficking at the university. His research has been supervised by Professor Álvaro Alzina Lozano, "to whom I am very grateful for encouraging me to achieve good things for my professional future," says Benito.

Receiving this award is "a motivation to continue working in the field of defending Human Rights in the future," says Benito. Currently, he is preparing the opposition for access to the judicial career and, later, "I would like to combine my work with teaching at the university."

Every year, the “Enrique Ruano Casanova” Contest rewards an institution committed to defending human rights and a law student from any Spanish university who carries out work in this area.

This year, specifically, the body chosen has been the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the awarded student, Isabel Dolores Benito. The winning work will be published in FORO magazine and from next year, Benito will become part of the jury for this award.

Enrique Ruano Casanova was a law student at the Complutense University, murdered in the custody of the Franco regime's political police in 1969. His death led to several protests and a wave of social indignation that forced the regime to declare a state of emergency.
