The “Miguel Catalán” Research Award highlights the scientific achievements of URJC professor David Serrano Granados and recognizes his contribution to the training of researchers and the creation of a school, as well as the national and international impact of his work throughout his career. professional.

His most relevant scientific contributions have focused on the development of catalysts with applications in the circular economy, hydrogen and advanced biofuel production, and CO2 recovery. Among its achievements is the development of new strategies for the synthesis of zeolites (materials with wide applications as catalysts, adsorbents and ion exchange agents in a multitude of industrial processes), providing them with unique characteristics and improved properties, such as the presence of hierarchical porosity and high accessibility. The URJC professor is one of the leading international researchers in this line and, recently, has achieved a prestigious “ERC Advanced Grants” in which he has proposed a disruptive concept of zeolites with a dendritic nano-structure and with applications in very diverse fields. Furthermore, his research group has been a pioneer in the use of zeolitic and mesostructured catalysts in chemical recycling processes of plastic waste, contributing to reducing their environmental impact and promoting their circularity.

David Serrano thanked him for the award, highlighting that “its achievement is not only a personal success, but has been possible thanks to the extraordinary and enthusiastic contribution of a large research group with whom he has had the opportunity to collaborate throughout his career.” passed through different institutions, in particular the Complutense Universities of Madrid, the Rey Juan Carlos University and the IMDEA Energy Institute.”

An extensive scientific career

David Serrano Granados has a degree in Chemical Sciences (1985) and a doctorate in Industrial Chemistry from the Complutense University of Madrid (1990). He has been a visiting researcher at the California Institute of Technology and the University of California, Santa Barbara. His teaching career began as a full professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, later moving to the Rey Juan Carlos University, where he obtained a professorship in the area of Chemical Engineering in 2002. At the URJC he has also held different academic positions. : coordinator of Environmental Sciences, vice-rector for Research and Technological Innovation and director of the Department of Chemical, Environmental and Materials Technology.

In 2007 he was appointed director of the IMDEA Energy Institute, a position he has held since the founding of this research center until the present. Recently, and with his leadership, IMDEA Energía has achieved the prestigious accreditation as a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence, granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

In addition, the URJC professor has participated in approximately 85 research projects and contracts and is the author of more than 260 publications in indexed scientific journals, with an average impact of more than 50 citations per publication (H index = 67). He also appears in the different editions of the ranking prepared by Stanford University among the 2% of the most influential scientists worldwide.
