Archeology en route through the Ribera del Duero

Next Saturday, June 19, 2021, an informative day will be held in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento of the municipality of La Sequera de Haza (Burgos) from 11:00 a.m. to present the results of the 2020 excavation campaign of the hermitage and necropolis of San Nicolás. The activity will include a guided tour of the site and an exhibition accessible to all audiences.

The activity "Archeology en route: ArqueoSequera Project" will begin on June 19 and will continue throughout the summer, in parallel with the development of the archaeological research projects planned for this 2021 campaign. During the initial day, the results of the excavation campaign in the hermitage and necropolis of San Nicolás in the municipality of La Sequera de Haza, located in the region of Ribera del Duero in the province of Burgos. In addition, on this day you can enjoy a guided tour of the site, as well as the exhibition "Archaeology for all" which, together with the organization of several experimental archeology workshops, will serve to bring Archeology and History closer to all audiences. . The activity is open to all audiences and does not require prior registration.

Throughout the month of July, the fourth excavation campaign will be carried out at the San Nicolás site, led by professors Francisco Reyes and Alberto Polo from the URJC Archeology Department and subsidized by the La Sequera de Haza City Council. . During those dates, new guided tours and activities coordinated by the research team can be carried out. 

“The archaeological dissemination actions aim to bring the scientific results closer to the public first-hand and help in the creation of new heritage and tourist resources in one of the most depopulated areas of Spain. Let's not forget that La Sequera de Haza has a population of 30 registered inhabitants”, says Alberto Polo Romero, coordinator of the activity and professor of the Archeology Area of ​​the URJC.

This project is also part of the program of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+i) of the Vice President for Research and has the collaboration of the Archeology Area and the HASTHGAR High Performance group of the Rey Juan Carlos University, @amano.views, Celia Uve Illustration and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT)-Ministry of Science and Innovation.

Virtual museum and children's stories for the dissemination of Archeology

The "Archaeology en route" project is completed with the creation of a virtual museum that will be available soon on the Sketchfab platform with the 3D models and virtualizations made in the different excavation phases. They will serve so that citizens can see the various findings in open access through augmented reality in the future musealization of the deposit. Finally, it should be noted that in the coming months a story for children written by the archaeological team and illustrated by the artist Celia Uve will come to light.
