Everything prepared for the most scientific night of the year

This Friday, September 30, the URJC will celebrate the thirteenth European Night of Researchers in Madrid. The program of activities will revolve around one of the missions set by the European Union by 2030: “Beating cancer”.

Irene Vega

The Rey Juan Carlos University will host the European Night of Researchers in Madrid at the Alcorcón Campus, under the slogan “Towards a future without cancer”. This thirteenth edition coincides with the acts to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the URJC and the host of the event will be the Faculty of Health Sciences. Throughout the day, the URJC scientific community will show different lines of research related to cancer risk factors and their prevention through health promotion and the encouragement of healthy habits. The issue of the consequences of cancer treatment and the patient's quality of life will also be addressed, and it will be revealed how Physiotherapy, Psychology or Pharmacology can help counteract the undesirable effects of chemotherapy and the disease itself. From a more technological aspect, it will be possible to discover how nanoparticles and treatments based on nanomaterials help in the detection and treatment of cancer.

Most of the activities will be aimed at a general public, including children and their families, as well as ESO and Baccalaureate students, and will include dynamic workshops, experiments and demonstrations in the laboratory or viewing of film fragments. Thus, a journey will be made from the design of an antitumor drug to its manufacture and clinical application, it will be shown how microorganisms can help reduce carcinogenic contaminants in the environment and thereby reduce the risk of cancer or it will be explained why The Mediterranean diet is associated with a reduction in cancer incidence and mortality, based on scientific studies.

Some activities will be designed to bring science closer to children who, accompanied by their families, will be able to discover in a session of experiments the three mechanisms of protection of the body (skin, mucous membranes and cells of the immune system), their importance in the protection and detection of diseases, as well as the changes that occur in them to facilitate the progression of cancer.

New technologies for early detection and cancer treatment

Throughout the day, the latest advances in the detection of heating (by different radiofrequency waves) of the brain through the use of nanoparticles will also be shown. The attending public will be able to observe the fluorescence of certain nanoparticles and the dependence of their different colors and intensities on their properties. In addition, it will be revealed how oncological treatments affect walking and balance due to their high toxicity and how the scientific community works when it comes to finding new treatments for cancer will be explained.

The organization of the activities, within the framework of this project, is coordinated by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+I), dependent on the URJC Vice-rectorate for Research, and the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The activities of the UCC+I also have the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) – Ministry of Science and Innovation.

European project for scientific dissemination

La European Researchers' Night, which is part of the consortium MADRID NIGHT, aims to promote scientific culture in society in general and promote scientific-technological vocations among young people. Traditionally, this event is held on the last Friday of September in more than 300 European cities simultaneously.

The Rey Juan Carlos University is a member of the MADRID NIGHT, coordinated by the madri+d Foundation and funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe Program, under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (with grant agreement No. 101061343).
