A total of nine candidates from different educational centers in the Community of Madrid have staged their scientific work in the final phase of the ninth URJC 'Science Monologues' contest.

The students, who have previously received training on the characteristics of a monologue and how to prepare the text, have had to demonstrate the results of all this work at the final gala of the contest, which has taken place in the Assembly Hall of the Library of the Madrid Campus.

At the end of the event, the jury awarded different prizes in four different categories: 'Best monologue' to Lina Al-Morabet Tahirí (IES Avenida de los Toreros), 'Best scientific content' to David Santana Escudero (IES Joaquín Rodrigo), ' Best staging' to Emma Hernández (IES Enrique Tierno Galván) and 'Best communicator' to Virginia Platero López (IES Alfredo Kraus). In addition, the winner of the best monologue will travel to Bilbao on September 14 to participate as a representative for Madrid in the science show national gala, an event that takes place within the framework of the Naukas Bilbao scientific dissemination congress.

The jury was made up of Magdalena Rubio Fabián, responsible for the Innovation Programs of the Ministry of Education, Universities, Science and Spokesperson of the Community of Madrid; Pilar López Gallo, Deputy Director of Communication and Scientific Culture of the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC); César López García, head of the Science Dissemination and Participation Unit of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT); Inmaculada Luque, editor of science books and collaborator of Alioth Arte y Ciencia; and Gema Díaz Gil, academic director of Promotion, Promotion and Monitoring of Research of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation and Transfer of the URJC.

In addition, the gala has been entertained by the musician and professor José Carlos Pino and, during the deliberations of the jury, several of the winners of the last edition of the contest Rap with Science have performed a version of the winning song. This contest is organized by the Rocasolano-CSIC Institute of Physical Chemistry.

Training in communication skills

This initiative is part of a training and collaboration project between educational centers (IES Joaquín Rodrigo, IES Villablanca, IES Valdebernardo and IES Alameda de Osuna) and the URJC, through the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+). I) and the Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation and Transfer. In addition, the contest has the collaboration of the FECYT-Ministry of Science and Innovation within the framework of the Call for aid for the promotion of scientific, technological and innovation culture. "One more year, and there are already a few, we make this activity of scientific dissemination a reality in which we hope, in addition to making young people familiar with science and not fleeing from it, that science also reaches society", has outstanding Carmen García Galera, academic director of the UCC+I.

This project uses the monologue as an educational resource to promote the acquisition of the basic skills proposed for the curriculum of ESO and Baccalaureate students. Through this format, students learn to present their research projects while fostering their interest in science and scientific dissemination.

Since the beginning of the 2022/2023 academic year, several phases of training have been carried out: characteristics of a monologue, writing the text, developing creativity, stage resources and body language. To carry out the training part, several teachers from the participating educational centers and associations such as Alioth, Art and Science and Big Van Science have collaborated.
