The fourteenth European Night of Madrid Researchers at the URJC has been the first event held within the program of scientific dissemination activities for this 2023-2024 academic year. With the motto “Let's take care of our soils for food security and climate change”, workshops, demonstrations and experiments have been organized on the Móstoles Campus to highlight one of the missions set by the European Union for 2030: “A pact for soil for Europe”. This year the host at the URJC has been the Higher School of Experimental Sciences and Technology (ESCET) and its scientific community has shown more than a hundred participants the different lines of research they are developing, based on the study of the current situation of soils, from the fields of Geology, Biology, Hydrology or Environmental Geochemistry. The importance of soil conservation with food security and the urgent need for sustainable management in the fight against climate change has also been addressed. In addition, the Technological Support Center has participated, which has organized guided tours of its laboratories and pilot plants, such as the wastewater treatment plant or the new photovoltaic plant.

The official inauguration was chaired by the rector of the URJC Javier Ramos, who was accompanied by the director of the ESCET Alejandro Ureña. The event was enlivened by the performance of the Sante Duo of guitar and flute.

Scientific dissemination program, supported by European and national projects

La European Researchers' Night is part of the consortium MADRID NIGHT and aims to promote scientific culture in society in general and promote scientific-technological vocations among young people. Traditionally, this event is celebrated on the last Friday of September in more than 350 European cities simultaneously. The Rey Juan Carlos University is a partner of MADRIDNIGHT, coordinated by the madri+d Foundation and financed by the European Union within the Horizon Europe Program, under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (with grant agreement no. 101061343).

The organization of activities at the URJC has been coordinated by the ESCET and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+I), dependent on the Vice-Rectorate for Research, Innovation and Transfer of the URJC. In addition, the activities of the UCC+I also have the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) – Ministry of Science and Innovation, through the Call for aid to promote scientific, technological and innovation culture 2022. Within the framework of this project, different events will also be organized during the 2023-2024 academic year to promote scientific vocations and highlight the work of URJC researchers. In the month of November, the XXIII Madrid Science and Innovation Week will be held and, starting in 2024, activities will be organized to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), The VI Scientific Dissemination Awards will be announced, the participation of the URJC in the Madrid is Science Fair will be promoted and the tenth Science Monologues contest will be organized, among other activities.
