The MetalBio Thematic Network, coordinated by Santiago Gómez Ruiz, professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the URJC and director of the COMET-NANO research group, its main objective is to promote collaborative and quality research on the development and study of theranostic (therapeutic and diagnostic) properties of formulations of new metallic drugs in different nanomaterials, with application in medical fields such as cancer, bacterial infections or neurodegenerative diseases, among others.

The first launch meeting of the MetalBio Network brought together at the URJC the leaders of research groups specialized in Bioinorganic Chemistry from 13 Spanish universities to jointly establish objectives and perspectives for research on metals and metal complexes with biological and therapeutic applications.

“The coordination of the URJC in this thematic network places our entity at the forefront of research in the field of development of new metallic systems with therapeutic applications, a research field of broad social interest, placing us as the driving force of research and innovation with great potential in the development of new bioinorganic systems with therapeutic applications,” highlights Santiago Gómez Ruiz.

Furthermore, this collaboration seeks to promote the research career of the young members of the participating groups, promoting their leadership capacity so that they can be at the forefront of research in this field in the coming years. The Network will focus on encouraging the participation of the newest researchers in actions that promote relationships with companies in the sector, as well as improving the options for their participation in international research consortia.
