The Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Transfer and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit have organized the third edition of 'Science is you' to highlight the involvement of the URJC research staff in scientific dissemination activities. During the event, the V Scientific Dissemination Awards and participation diplomas in the twenty-third Science Week and the fourteenth European Researchers' Night were awarded.

The URJC scientific community has received recognition for its effort and dedication in promoting interest and knowledge of society on scientific topics. The third edition of 'Science is you' has aimed to highlight the more than 200 activities that have been organized in the Science and Innovation Week and European Researchers' Night in 2023, two of the most important events in the field of science dissemination. 

Professor Carmen García Galera, academic director of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+I), has expressed gratitude and congratulations to the protagonists of these activities. “It is time for celebration, with family, with colleagues, and from the Vice-Rectorate and the Scientific Culture Unit we believe that science is also a reason for celebration.”The director of the UCC+I has also highlighted her contribution at a time when misinformation and the so-called “Fake Science” are making their way and society needs the work of disseminators. 

The ceremony was chaired by the rector of the URJC Javier Ramos, who took the opportunity to thank the efforts of the scientific community that is part of the University, highlighting the importance of attracting as many people as possible to science. “Shared knowledge is the cornerstone of a free society. Only with an educated, interested and critical society can we move forward safely towards a more promising future,” declares the rector. 

The event included Fernando García Muiña, vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Transfer of the URJC, César López García, head of the UDisclosure and Participation Unit Science of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and Susana Pérez Holgueras, head of the Scientific Communication and Culture Area of ​​the Madrid+D Knowledge Foundation, who have also expressed their gratitude to the scientific community of the URJC. 

V Scientific Dissemination Awards

The participants of the fifth call for Scientific Dissemination Awards have also received their participation diploma during the celebration of this event. In addition, Fernando García Muiña, vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Transfer, has presented the prizes to the three winners of this contest, which has the collaboration of the FECYT-Ministry of Science and Innovation. The vice-rector himself has taken the opportunity to highlight all the work carried out in the last 3 years by the URJC dissemination community. “The data are revealing, from the growth of the UCC+I, as well as the proposed activities and their variety,” says the vice-rector.

The first prize went to Diana Morales Manzanares for her activity Community archeology of Guzmán Castle, an initiative that has aimed to involve the local population in the archaeological research process.  

The second award was received by Gema Alcolea Díaz for the activity Discover the interests behind journalism. Didactic game Web of influences, a project that aims to contribute to the development of reflective societies through a didactic game of simulation and rules, as a contest, which leads to asking the who and the whys behind the media messages. 

Finally, the third prize went to Marta Albert Márquez for the activity The new easy support law, a guide designed to publicize and explain the reform introduced by Law 8/2021, to support people with disabilities in the exercise of their legal capacity among young people with intellectual disabilities.
