Experts discuss the future of the Prado Museum in the URJC summer courses.

The British historian and Hispanist John Elliot, together with the winning architects of the International Competition for the rehabilitation of the Prado Museum's Hall of Realms, Carlos Rubio and Norman Foster, have met within the framework of the XNUMXth edition of the summer courses organized by the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC).

John Elliot, has referred to the fact that the rehabilitation works are an opportunity to gain exhibition space and thus be able to exhibit in more rooms, temporary exhibitions and the museum's own collections "very important paintings that are now in the basements" he has mentioned in the During the course “El Palacio del Buen Retiro and the Museo del Prado: history, art and heritage”, organized by URJC professor Isabel Enciso, the speakers discussed the future rehabilitation process of the monument and its architectural improvements.

According to Carlos Rubio "you have to know what elements to incorporate, preserve and interpret to give the building a new shape" The Hall of Realms has undergone modifications over the years, with which Rubio details that it is not about preserving the building As it was in the past, it makes no sense to turn it into a museum of its own.

In the subsequent conference, Fernando Checa, Professor of Art History at the Complutense University of Madrid, has attributed to the project by Norman Foster and Carlos Rubio, Trace Oculta, a modernizing air that respects the essential parts and preserves the spirit of the building. Even so, he has shown his fear that the rehabilitation of the Salón de Reinos building would become something parallel to the Prado Museum and would be separated from the Villanueva building.

On the other hand, John Elliot has also debated in an extensive talk with the Professor of Modern History at the Complutense University of Madrid, Fernando Bouza, about the Palacio del Buen Retiro. Elliot has also explained in detail the preparation of the book "A Palace for the King" together with his colleague, also an American historian and Hispanist and the world's leading authority in the study of the work and life of Diego Velázquez, Jonathan Brown. The book, which is a good reference for its excellent reviews, deals with the construction of the Palacio del Buen Retiro, intermingling the art and politics of the XNUMXth century.
