The Congress 'Higher Quality Education in the Latin American Space', which will bring together important international experts, will be held at the headquarters of the International University of La Rioja (UNIR) in Quito, Ecuador, from March 8 to 9. The different challenges and challenges posed by higher education in Latin America will be analyzed, with special emphasis on inter-university collaboration and academic career development. There will also be space to discuss the importance of doctoral studies and the role of ICT in higher education, among other issues.

The vice-rector for Innovation and Transfer of the Rey Juan Carlos University, Juan Antonio Melero, will transfer, in different interventions, the experience of the international doctoral programs and the lines of research of the university.

The professor of Chemistry at the Rey Juan Carlos University, Guillermo Calleja, will moderate a discussion table on doctoral programs in which the vice-rector Melero will also participate. For Calleja, "the objective of this discussion table will be to help build doctoral projects and inter-university collaboration in Latin America, which is a region of the world with a significant shortage of doctors." In this sense, the example of the Campus of International Excellence-Intelligent Energy will be given, a leading collaboration project between the Rey Juan Carlos University and the University of Alcalá de Henares (UAH) "which represents a very valuable experience", says the professor.

Presentation of COFUTURO in Ecuador

The congress will be the framework for the official presentation in Ecuador of the interuniversity collaboration consortium, COFUTURO. This consortium, as stated by Guillermo Calleja “has the objective of being a useful tool to develop collaboration between Spanish and Latin American universities”. COFUTURO is an initiative of the Rey Juan Carlos University, the International University of La Rioja, (UNIR) and the University of Alcalá de Henares and is open to the participation of universities that so wish. It has been running since last November.

According to Guillermo Calleja, “COFUTURO starts modestly, but has the goal of being a real collaborative project”. Among its goals is the development of programs related to training at Bachelor, Master and Doctorate levels. In addition, the signatory entities want to promote academic mobility and virtual mobility plans, and possible training programs for researchers will be established in order to create emerging research groups with the capacity for self-progress.
