URJC students, to the 'conquest' of Mars

A dozen students from different grades participate in a contest of ideas to project the life of a million earthlings on Mars.

How to organize the life of a million people on Mars? To answer this question, URJC students are working on the 'Mars Home Planet 3D Modeling Challenge', through the 'Aula HP' on the Móstoles Campus and coordinated by the technology company 'SpikaTech'.

According to Carlos Zúñiga, commercial director of the SpikaTech company, "the Rey Juan Carlos University team participates in the area of Civil Engineering". The project consists of "designing an underground city" on the red planet. His proposal is called 'Nova Spika. Tomorrow's Future, today's solutions'.

The initiative consists of two phases. In a first stage, 3 students of Aeronautical Engineering and one of Integral Design and Image Management participate. They have also participated, as Zúñiga explained, "students of the degree in Architecture, who have been in charge of calculating structures" of the underground city.

Likewise, six students of the Degree in Video Game Design and Development have been in charge of the 3D modeling of the city, which can be 'visited' in the 'Aula HP' thanks to virtual reality.

A second stage of the project is scheduled to begin on March 27. At this level, Software Engineering students will design and work with "characters developed with Artificial Intelligence that move around Mars", Carlos Zúñiga has indicated. He has explained that the characters will work "by facial recognition and natural movement learning", so their virtual tours of the Martian city will enjoy significant realism.

Just one more push

The URJC project just needs a little boost to sneak into the top positions, right now it is in position number 10. Here you can give him that last push.

To vote you need to select 'Login to vote'. You must access with a Facebook or Google+ user or create an account. Once inside, in the small squares bar you have to choose the one that is furthest to the right so that the rating is 'Excellent'.

The winning team will win HP equipment for 3D design and a trip to NASA among other prizes.

The 'Mars Home Planet 3D Modeling Challenge' is one of the branches of the 'HP Mars Home Planet' contest, organized by the HP company and the hardware developer, NVIDIA in collaboration with NASA and the European Space Agency.
