The URJC competes with 3 teams in the most important programming contest in southern Europe

It is the Spanish university that will bring the most teams to Paris, home of the SWERC (Southwestern Europe Regional Contest) of competitive programming, which is held in December.

The University teams are now in full training phase, which will last until December. According to Jesús Sánchez Oro, head of Competitive Programming at the URJC, in training “we pose problems similar to those that are going to be found in competition”.

These problems are solved with the use of complicated algorithms. In Paris, the members of the 'Los Más Debugs', 'LactoseOverdose' and 'MilkTeam' teams will face problems in which, according to Jesús Sánchez, “they will have to identify how to solve them, because the approaches are convoluted. In addition, they have the pressure of limited time.”

This is the second year in a row that the URJC places 3 teams in the SWERC, which indicates a positive trend, although, as Jesús Sánchez assures, “competitive programming is still growing at our university, but we are at a good level in the National scope".

In addition to the URJC, the Spanish participation is completed with teams from the following universities: Complutense, Polytechnic of Valencia and Valladolid.

The SWERC is a competition open to teams from Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal and Israel and is held on December 1 and 2 at the Télecom Paris Tech. The winning team will qualify for the world finals of Competitive Programming, to be held in 2019.

In addition to participating in the tournament, the teams will be able to meet members of leading companies in the ICT sector who, as a practice, will present them with problems that will serve as training before the big competition.
