Professor José Eloy Hortal wins, in Belgium, a renowned history prize

The publication 'The ceremonial at the Brussels Court of the seventeenth century. The manuscripts of Francisco Alonso Lozano' has received the Henri Pirenne 2019 award, which is presented by the Belgian Commission Royale d'Histoire.

The prize aims to reward, regardless of nationality, the historian who, with his work, contributes to the knowledge of Belgian history. In this way, the jury that awards the Henri Pirenne prizes, which are organized biannually, has wanted to reward the more than twenty years of research on the Court of Brussels by the URJC professor of Modern History.

Hortal published his book 'The Ceremonial at the Brussels Court of the 2018th Century. The manuscripts of Francisco Alonso Lozano' in XNUMX, and in which Pierre-François Pirlet and Africa Espíldora García have also participated as editors. With this publication he has achieved this important recognition, the highest award granted by the 'Commission Royale d'Historie' of Belgium.

The theme of the book is based on the figure of Francisco Alonso Lozano and the transcription of his two historical works, 'Plan ou Estat de la maison royale dans ces estats de flanders' and 'Notice de toutes les emplois de la cour et de la chapelle Royale of Bruxelles'.

During the text, Professor Hortal discovers, on the one hand, the influence that the House of Burgundy maintained on the court of Brussels during the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries and, on the other, how the court gradually assumed its own Hispanic elements that lasted over time.

The award ceremony took place at the Hotel Stanhope in Brussels, in an event chaired by the president of the 'Commission royale d'Histoire', Théresè de Hemptinne, which was attended by all the members of said commission.

José Eloy Hortal wanted to thank in his speech, both in French and Dutch, official languages ​​of the institution, this recognition to the members of the jury, their collaborators and all those who helped to the culmination of this project.
