A 'hacker' in the Academy

A 'hacker' in the Academy A 'hacker' in the Academy

The URJC invests doctor Honorary Chema Alonso, hacker, computer engineer and director of Telefónica's Global Digital Consumer Unit (CDCO). Alonso has focused his intervention during the act of Santo Tomás de Aquinas, held at the Rectorate, in vindicating the figure of the 'hacker' as an agent of change and has advocated building a humanist technology.

the new doctor Honorary, Mostoleño Jose María Alonso Cebrián, better known as Chema Alonso, wanted to vindicate the figure of the 'hacker' as the driving force for transforming things, “hackers are those who ask themselves, why? And yes? or What can happen?”, when faced with technological problems and challenges. In this sense, Alonso recalled his fight to 'de-stigmatize' the definition of a hacker in the RAE dictionary and congratulated himself because the current one is already more accurate to the reality that he tries to define: "a person with great skills in managing computers that investigates a computer system to report failures and develop improvement techniques”.

Alonso has pointed out that a "new generation of 'hackers'" is needed to investigate the system and develop improvement techniques to build a "humanist technology", and has reflected on the large amount of data that, through our Internet browsing and social networks, collect companies.

the new doctor Honorary has indicated that with all this information about us (tastes, preferences, ideology, etc...), companies and operators are like friends who know us best, and friends, Alonso points out, "use all this information for my good" , so companies, governments and technology, points out Telefónica's CDDO, should do the same. For this reason, Alonso points out, the new 'hackers' must "continue pushing the limits that lead us down new paths", and in this line he has closed his intervention, "the world is out there, waiting for you to change it", inviting the new generations to take part in the transformation of society.

Alonso was introduced by the professor of the Higher Technical School of Computer Engineering, Marta Beltrán, who reviewed the academic and professional career of the new doctor Honorary of which he stated that it is an international reference in the field of computing and more specifically in the areas of computer security, 'Big Data' and Artificial Intelligence.

“The Rey Juan Carlos University is the largest social elevator in the Community of Madrid”

The rector recalled, in his speech during the Academic Ceremony of Santo Tomás de Aquino, that the URJC “is the largest social elevator in the Community of Madrid. It is the University that supports talent, regardless of the economic or social situation of those who study here. It is the University that has the largest number of students and graduates who are the first generation of university students in their families. The University that has achieved that the areas with the lowest GDP in the community have changed their environment and their expectations. And he has done it with the involvement of the town councils, aware of the transforming power of the educational institution they welcomed”.

Javier Ramos has claimed the role of actor of social transformation of the URJC and of the University as an institution and has warned about the fact that the University as an institution may be isolating itself from society.

In this sense, he pointed out that "We must stop to think if it is possible that we are leaving the social initiative exclusively in the hands of politicians" and asked the following questions: "How else do we understand that we are not leading the fight against gender inequality? ? How is it possible that it is not the university that leads the ethics of sustainability of the planet, to transmit it to future generations, as it has done, for centuries, with knowledge?, how is it possible that the university does not recover, among its priorities, the fair distribution of resources, and not mobilize to achieve it?”

Ramos has pointed out that this would be going back to the roots of the University, that for which the University of Salamanca was launched eight centuries ago, helping society to solve its problems and ensuring that those who want to enjoy knowledge do not see themselves prevented from doing so for economic reasons.

The rector recalled the great efforts that all levels of the university community have made since the 2011 crisis and highlighted the fact that, despite them, "our university has continued to serve, and has trained more than 100.000 people, a much higher number to what would correspond if he had resigned himself to continue matching the service performed, to the resources received.

Ramos also had words for the new doctor Honorary, whom he congratulated and recalled that "in the recent difficult times that this house has gone through, he was with us, raised his free voice to claim the quality of what had been his place of study, to show that here you learn, that here you are free”.

Recognition of effort

The rector also had words for the doctors, whom he recognized for their efforts and that of their families for what is a great sacrifice for not dedicating much time to our loved ones, research, and welcomed them to the Academy. This effort was also recognized by Chema Alonso, also a doctorate from the URJC, who pointed out that the new doctors, 83 (43 men and 40 women) from all the programs of the International Doctoral School, take the most important part of the university: “knowledge”.
