The URJC brings Madrid's heritage closer with an educational game

The pilot project allows people with intellectual disabilities to get to know, by playing with pieces, unique buildings in the region, such as the Puerta de Alcalá or the Casita del Príncipe del Sitio Real de El Pardo.

The initiative 'Real Architecture: Real Architecture. Building Heritage' tries to improve knowledge of the cultural heritage of the Community of Madrid, of enormous historical, cultural and educational value. “Considering from the human process the identification of the physical space where it is located and its use through its inhabitants. In addition, to achieve these objectives it is necessary to configure the intervention, not only from the cultural or heritage aspect, but from an integrating social perspective”, Explain those responsible for the activity.

The director of the initiative, which is carried out in collaboration with the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and Sistema Lupo, is the professor of the Modern History Area and researcher at the URJC, Félix Labrador. The teacher has pointed out that in the first two sessions “the reception has been quite good. We've had a fantastic response from users."

The sessions began at the beginning of last week and run throughout the month of July. During them, 15 users of the Virgen de Lourdes Educational and Occupational Center of the Promiva Foundation learn, through games, emblematic works of Madrid's heritage, such as the Puerta de Alcalá or the Casita del Príncipe.

After these initial sessions, those attending the workshop have been able, thanks to the Lupo construction system, like a giant Lego, to begin to recreate emblematic buildings of the Community of Madrid. Through this recreation, the URJC teachers, together with the center's monitors, have contextualized these buildings in their historical, social and cultural moment, arousing the curiosity of the users about the customs, utilities and uses that have been made of these buildings throughout history.

In addition, explains Félix Labrador, "the program includes an organized visit, which this time will be to the Casita del Príncipe del Sitio Real de El Pardo" so that users can get to know one of the most emblematic spaces of the Community 'in situ' from Madrid. Apart from historical buildings, the participants will also be able, thanks to the system of interconnected pieces, to collect vintage musical instruments and learn about their historical and social context.

The initiative is a pilot project that aims to make itself known and grow to be applied during the school year for populations at risk of social exclusion.

'Royal Architecture. Royal Architecture. Building Heritage”, is part of the inter-university project 'Madrid Society and Heritage: Past and Cultural Tourism (H2019/HUM-5898) financed by the Community of Madrid and the European Social Fund.
