Posted by Lucia Mantecon

Another year the "Francisco Villamartín" Chair of Security and Defense celebrates the Permanent Seminar Prof. D. Eduardo García Poblete, the difference is that this time, as a result of the pandemic we are suffering, the sessions will be remote.

The “Francisco Villamartín” Chair of Security and Defense inaugurated on October 27 a new edition of the Permanent Seminar Prof. D. Eduardo García Poblete, an activity that falls within the framework of collaboration between the Higher Center for National Defense Studies ( CESEDEN) and the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC).

The Seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Vicente Garrido Rebolledo, Director of the “Francisco Villamartín” Chair in Security and Defense, and GB Francisco José Dacoba Cerviño, Director of the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE).

Due to the current health circumstances, this thirteenth edition of the Seminar is taking place through the Blackboard Collaborate online platform.

In this new edition we have six thematic modules. The first session took place on October 27 and will end on November 11. Each Module has focused on a specific problem and topics such as cybersecurity have been addressed; nuclear, chemical or bacteriological terrorism or the importance of data analysis in Intelligence. In addition, topics related to the Sociology of Defense or the role played by the specialized media in covering events related to Security and Defense will also be discussed. Finally, we will conclude the Seminar with a specific Module on the impact of COVID-19 on the terrorist threat.

With the celebration of this Seminar, the “Francisco Villamartín” Chair of Security and Defense continues to work so that the Culture of Defense continues to be present in the classrooms and in the different forums of our university.

Villamartin, a forgotten genius

The “Francisco Villamartín” Chair of Security and Defense pays homage to a XNUMXth-century Spanish soldier and treatise writer, Commander Francisco Villamartín y Ruiz de la Peña, author of “Nociones del arte militar” and considered one of the main theoreticians of all times in terms of tactics and strategies. A scholar who analyzed war contexts and knew how to put psychological, social, economic and military aspects in common. The ups and downs of the convulsive Spanish XNUMXth century did not contribute to doing justice to the talent and projection of Francisco Villamartín.
