#Sistempol2021, the innovative Political Science teaching project

Posted by Ruben Navas

Professor Jorge Porras of the Political System II subject of the Degree in Political Science and Public Management at the URJC applies this new teaching method together with Daniel Casal, professor of Political Science at the UCM.

This project, called under the hashtag #Sistempol2021, has been promoted by Professor Daniel Casal, being a professor at the URJC in the subject of Political System II, and later, as of 2019, by Professor Jorge Porras, who succeeded him as head of this course. The idea of collaborating and uniting the groups of the URJC and the UCM arose from the friendship of both professors.

The main objective of this practical exercise is for students to carry out a simulation of an electoral campaign in a specific country. At the end of the course they have to present a comparative work of the political system chosen that year with other different ones. Thus, it began with a simulation of the Swedish political system, in 2019 it was that of Israel, in 2020 it was a simulation of the primaries of the US Democratic Party and this year it was Italy. It is an immersion exercise in a political system to get to know it and go deeper into it.

This new methodology keeps students motivated while they acquire professional skills and abilities. Because as Jorge Porras says, "being able to face public speaking, teamwork, adapt to changing situations, negotiate with your teammates and with rival teams are necessary skills to progress far beyond the class and not reach so immature to a voracious and demanding labor market".

This type of hands-on exercise is a way to enrich university teaching and prepare students to leave with a more complete preparation for university by going beyond academic knowledge.
