The IV edition of the Conference on Women in Architecture will be held between April 27 and 29 under the slogan "From the academy to the profession". The colloquiums take place in the afternoon, from 15 to 17 pm, and consist of two presentations per day. The first addresses a theoretical approach of interest carried out by the URJC faculty and some guests. The second, meanwhile, presents some specific aspect of practical application related to the general theme of the Conference carried out by the URJC faculty and guests. Each day will end with a discussion table between speakers and attendees in which the different topics exposed on that day will be discussed.

This edition will be carried out electronically by Microsoft Teams, so attendees must register using the following link. The initiative arises from the students of Architecture and their associated Double Degrees, achieving a high participation in previous editions. Likewise, the event stands as an academic format that brings together different interests and individual research, which gives its authors visibility and projection in the future.

The conferences are part of one of the research lines of the teaching staff of the Degree in Fundamentals of Architecture. One of its main objectives is the publication of the Minutes of the Conference that include the presentations and debates carried out as a fundamental element so that all this knowledge is collected in a printed text that allows it to be disseminated.

A greater role for women

For Elena Escudero, Professor of Architecture and one of the organizers of the event, "there is a growing interest among students in the role of women in Architecture, both in the academic field, where the knowledge that nurtures the discipline is generated, and in professional practice, where social recognition is obtained”.

Elena also points out that several objectives are pursued with these conferences: "the first is" to promote students' awareness of the need to recognize the role of women in the history of architecture, so that they get used to citing them and using their work as reference, as is done with their male colleagues. The second is to identify the interests, functions and aesthetic issues that are currently considered relevant in architecture and that to a large extent incorporate elements that had traditionally been reserved for the female gender, such as care, crafts and decoration”.

Lastly, the architect adds: "the last goal that we aspire to achieve with these conferences is to raise awareness about the labor aspects that penalize women in the development of the profession to promote a more equal and fair work environment".
