URJC students have always been known as people with great aspirations and initiatives, even reaching an international level. Interviews, conferences and simulations – nothing is out of your reach. One of these most recent initiatives is "Diplomacy: two generations", which has made it possible for future professionals in the sector to meet with the German ambassador in Madrid, Wolfgang Dold. Miranda González and Alba Castillo, two International Relations students at URJC, have been the students in charge of organizing and conducting the interview. The official Twitter account of Ambassador of Germany from Madrid has already broadcast the five chapters of the meeting.

The idea of "Diplomacy: two generations" arose in a class of the subject Public Opinion and International Journalism. As one of the tasks, the students had to conduct a group interview with a person of interest. Miranda González was the one who had the initiative to contact Wolfgang Dold, who agreed "with pleasure". During the interview, current issues applied to the international arena were discussed: COVID management, the European Recovery Funds, Brexit and the effect that the rise of new technologies has had on diplomacy, among others.

Miranda González and Alba Castillo describe the interview experience as very positive, carried out in a close and welcoming environment. “The ambassador is a close and accessible person, which has greatly facilitated the meeting and has allowed us to solve our concerns and leave us wanting more”, narrate the students. Thanks to this, they have been able to have first-hand contact with the operation of the embassy and better understand the reason for the measures that are taken. "It is a way for the student to find his tastes and preferences when choosing his career path or consolidate these, whether in this case in the field of diplomacy or any other", Miranda and Alba say. "I wish any student who had this concern had this great opportunity since it is something that does not happen every day and allows the student to have another vision of reality."

continuous participation

This is not the first time that URJC students have taken the initiative in getting involved in international affairs. Before “Diplomacy: two generations”, three International Relations students – Delia Croitoru, Alba Gómez and Josefina González, - have appeared in the episode 18 of the podcast Guten Morgen from Madrid, which dealt with the presence of women in embassies. Entitled “The future of diplomacy is feminine”, there has been talk about the working conditions of women in the diplomatic field; the presence of women in the German and Spanish embassies; and how equality is guaranteed from the German Foreign Ministry.
