A day to be aware of disinformation

The event will take place on October 4 and 5 online, and will feature a large number of practical exercises for attendees.

In these times, society desperately asks for reliable data. On the other hand, some take advantage of this situation to spread false news. That is why honest, adequate and rigorous information for citizens is needed more than ever.

For this reason, the URJC, together with the teachers Florencia Claes and Beatriz Catalina, organizes these conferences together with Maldita.es, the objective of which is for attendees to have the opportunity to identify and explore useful tools for verifying journalistic content. The students who participate next October 4 and 5 will take a step forward to detect false news and will also work on their critical conscience.

One of the organizers, Florencia Claes, tells us that one of the highlights of this third edition "are the specific-technical tools to combat disinformation, since new tools or a new way of using them emerge year after year" .

As speakers, Stéphane M. Grueso from MALDITA.es and Laura del Río, coordinator of Maldito Bulo, will contribute their experience with disinformation and how to tackle it with the appropriate FakeCheckers. For Claes, this means a unique opportunity since "the speakers not only study disinformation, they are people who work with these tools in their real lives, and that gives a lot of value to the conference".

Although this event organized by the FCCOM is aimed at students of Journalism, Audiovisual Communication, Advertising and Public Relations..., it is open to any other type of profile interested in being more aware of the disinformation that exists. Although Florencia Claes is optimistic and thinks that "now, everyone is more aware that fake news exists and we stop to think for a moment before sharing something."
