The first circumnavigation of the world from an international perspective

17 academics from different countries analyze aspects of the historical circumnavigation in the III Congress 'Shipbuilding and the Magallanes-Elcano Voyage'.

It was 500 years ago when the Magellan-Elcano expedition completed the first circumnavigation of the world in history. Five ships with some 250 men on board left Sanlúcar de Barrameda on September 20, 1519. Three years later, only a handful of survivors would reach port.

The Rey Juan Carlos University celebrates an online congress on October 13, 14 and 15 that aims to recall and study various thematic lines related to the first circumnavigation. The high-performance research group in History, Archaeology, Science, Technology and Heritage of the URJC (HASTHGAR) organizes the III International Congress 'Shipbuilding and the Magallanes-Elcano Voyage'.

Francisco Reyes, professor of Archeology and one of the organizers and speakers, explains the main topics that the symposium will address: "With this edition we want to consolidate lines of work such as new technologies applied to the study and shipbuilding and navigation, work and life on board and the actual factories that worked to build the ships.”

A congress that crosses borders

One of the main novelties in this third edition of the congress is its internationalization beyond Portugal thanks to the contributions of experts such as the Japanese Yayoi Kawamura (University of Oviedo); Ovidio Juan Ortega Pereyra, head of the Underwater Cultural Heritage Service of Cuba; or the contributions of Igor Cerdá and René Becerril (University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Michoacán) on the construction of ships in Veracruz.

Professor Reyes says that these contributions give rise to a new line of work entitled 'From the other shores'. "With this line we promote what was done not only from the Iberian Peninsula, but also from the new discoveries and the consolidation of the naval industry in Atlantic and Pacific America".
