The relationships and discourses of adolescents and young people in high schools are a key piece to understand this vital stage. Social changes and the irruption of the digital offer new scenarios of coexistence among students that can lead to problems and situations of vulnerability such as racism and bullying.

The Rey Juan Carlos University organizes this Tuesday, October 19, the conference 'Adolescents and situations of vulnerability in a face-to-face and virtual world: harassment and racism', a meeting space for experts and professionals from different fields who will discuss the problems of coexistence between this social group.

Rebeca Suárez, professor at the URJC and member of the URJC Communication, Society and Culture high-performance research group and one of the organizers of the event together with Professor Antonio García, explains the need to hold a congress of this type: “ Harassment and racism is a problem that directly affects coexistence and relationships between students and we want to deal with it both in person and online”.

The main areas that will be addressed in the day are bullying or intimidation that exists both face-to-face and digitally and racist harassment. In the first case, the aim is to warn of the acts that are carried out on purpose to harm a fellow student. In the case of racist harassment, both face-to-face and digital, it is characterized by the supremacy or feeling of superiority of one nationality over others.

Speakers and professionals from different sectors

The conference has the participation of professionals and experts from different fields to offer a broad vision and a complete program on the subject. The congress will begin with a presentation on vulnerability, harassment and racism by Myriam Fernández Nevado, co-founder of the Association for the Sociology of Children and Adolescents (GSIA) and collaborator with the Sustainable Aranjuez Association, with which the conference is organized. event in collaboration with the URJC.

There will also be a workshop on hate speech by Professor Isabel Serrano from the Complutense University. URJC teachers, María Cruz López and Beatriz Catalina García, offer a discussion on the role of social networks in the school and family life of adolescents. To conclude, Alejandro Perales, representative of the Association of Communication Users (AUC), will give a presentation on the media, the Internet and young people.

The event will be held in person starting at 09:00 this Tuesday, October 19, in room 101 of Lecture Hall I on the Fuenlabrada Campus. More information and program in the following link.
