The agreement between the university library and the Classical and Modern Association materialized during the celebration at the University of 'The Day of the Writers', which was attended by the 2021 National Poetry Prize Winner, Miren Agur Meabe.

This Monday was Writers' Day. A day, promoted by the National Library (BNE) and the Classical and Modern Association, among other entities, which serves to make visible the authors of Spanish literature.

Within the framework of this event, the Rey Juan Carlos University signed an agreement with the Classical and Modern Association, through which it became the first university to form part of the 'Library Network for Equality', an initiative led by the BNE, in collaboration with the libraries of the various Autonomous Communities, for the recovery and enhancement of works written by women.

During the event, held on the Fuenlabrada campus, the rector, Javier Ramos, spoke about the figure of Saint Teresa of Jesus and highlighted her role as a writer in a difficult time for women. Writers' Day is celebrated on the Monday closest to the Santa Teresa festivity, which takes place on October 15.

The event featured the participation of the National Poetry Prize winner, Miren Agur Meabe, who was the first writer to see a work in Basque awarded this prize, the collection of poems 'Nola gorde errautsa kolkoan' ('How to keep ashes in your chest '). The poet vindicated the role of poetry and writing in Basque in a dialogue with fellow author, professor at the URJC and Philosopher, Marifé Bolaños, curator, in turn, of Women Writers' Day at the National Library.

“Reaffirm our commitment to give visibility to women authors”

For Magdalena Nebot, director of the Rey Juan Carlos University Library (BURJC), entering the Network of 'Libraries in Equality' means “reaffirming our commitment to giving visibility to women writers”.

Nebot points out that within the framework of this collaboration, a campaign to make women authors visible on the BURJC's social networks has already begun. In addition, he adds "each campus library has set up a table highlighting works written by women."

This agreement represents a new step in the fight for equality between men and women within the university, through, in this case, publicizing the large number and quality of female literary authors who have been undervalued throughout the history.
