Issues and concerns of international law, at the URJC

The II Seminar on International Jurisprudence and Current Affairs, organized by the Rey Juan Carlos University and the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Spain, will be held on October 21 and 28.

Diplomatic protection, State immunity and Digital Law in the European Union are some of the issues being discussed today at the II Seminar on Jurisprudence and International News. Students with an interest in international law have an opportunity to attend numerous lectures, conferences and round tables, receiving 0,35 RAC credits for doing so.

The event is held over two days, October 21 and 28, and is held in hybrid mode. On the one hand, it takes place in person at the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation, with a maximum capacity of 50 people; and on the other, a broadcast is available through Microsoft Teams for the rest of the attendees.

“Getting this year's seminar up and running has been very complicated,” says Berta Alam Pérez, professor of Law and International Relations at the URJC. She, together with Francisco Jiménez García and Elena Díaz Galán, both professors at the Rey Juan Carlos University, organize this meeting. Its first edition took place in 2019, and the 2020 edition had to be postponed due to the pandemic. In its entirety, about 90 people have registered to attend the event.

On the other hand, it also highlights the academic quality of the seminar. Among the speakers are both professors from the URJC and from other Spanish universities. Professors from the Carlos III University of Madrid, the University of Granada, the University of Oviedo and the Complutense University of Madrid will attend; and also the Italian University Milano-Bicocca. "We set out to get in touch with people who have made recent publications on this subject," continues Berta Alam. “It will be the first time that we are going to have a joint conference with those people, so it is very exciting for us as well.”

That academic quality and the work to coordinate the different presentations translates into a seminar of great interest and value for students. “We believe that it is necessary to take a look and understand what is happening on the international scene”, concludes Pilar Alam. “It is very important that students see the relationship between what happens in other countries and how it affects Spain.” Acquiring and transmitting that awareness is the ultimate goal of this seminar.
