The international relations sector is known for being vast and changing. For this reason, it is important to know and understand those agents who have emerged in recent years and who are becoming increasingly important on the diplomatic board. This is what the cycle of conferences 'The new world powers' is about. Organized by Vicente Garrido Rebolledo, tenured professor at the URJC, together with the Association for Humanitarian and Student Development (ADHUE), it aims to "move away from the westernist vision of international relations".

From the Eurocentric to a more global vision

This cycle of conferences arose as a result of the IV Plan for the Promotion of Research, which helps organize events, conferences and conferences in order to promote training beyond the classroom. “From the first moment, we planned it as a cycle that would deal with the new world powers and go beyond the United States, Russia and China”, comments Lucía Mantecón Díaz, academic secretary of the Francisco Villamartín Chair, of which Vicente Garrido is a member. .

The conferences will be held throughout October, November and December respectively. The first took place last Wednesday, October 20, on the Vicálvaro campus. Among the speakers, it had the Indian ambassador to Spain, Sanjay Verma; Professor of Political Science at the Complutense University of Madrid and analyst for 'El País', Eva Borreguero; and Academic Secretary of the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences of the URJC, Ana Felicitas Muñoz Pérez. During the conference, the speakers analyzed the change in perspective on the international scene, in which the actors from the Pacific, Asia, and Latin America are beginning to gain greater prominence. The opportunities, challenges and challenges of these new powers, and their relationship with other states were discussed.

He points out that this "new approach" that was given to the cycle has had a very positive response from the students. In this first, some 80 people have attended; and it is expected that the rest of the days will have a similar audience. "When talking about countries and issues about which there is not so much academic information, we believe that there has been more enthusiasm and interest on the part of the students," explains Lucía Mantecón.

The second day will take place on November 10. It will be about Turkey, and will be attended by the ambassador of that country. The third conference will be held in December and will deal with the powers of Latin America, in which the ambassadors of Mexico and Brazil will be present.
