Behavior, a key element of evolution

The talk, organized by the URJC and the Yales University, was given by Dr. Martha Muñoz, and focused on the relationship between thermoregulatory behavior and the evolution of lizards

The evolution of a species is a very complex process. It depends on a large number of factors that have to be analyzed individually and in depth to understand it. Each species is a world, and even those evolutionary aspects that are not directly related to the human being can be interesting and relevant to investigate.

This is what the last talk by Martha Muñoz, doctor and researcher at Yale University (United States), is about. The presentation, entitled "Behavior is the engine and brake of evolution", took place this Wednesday, October 27, at the URJC Móstoles campus; and was taught in English. In total, 15 people have attended, most of whom are researchers from the Department of Biology, Geology, Physics and Inorganic Chemistry.

“We came into contact with Dr. Muñoz through Twitter,” explains Talita Ferreira Amado, a researcher and technician at the URJC who organized the talk. “We knew that she would be visiting Europe this month and we wanted to know if she could visit us to discuss a collaboration with us.” In this presentation, she presented an overview of the scientific work that is carried out in her laboratory, Munoz Lab.

The central axis of the talk was the thermoregulation of lizards and the impact it has on the evolution of these animals. The different changes that reptiles can undergo depending on their habitat and their behavior were discussed, as well as highlighting the different most recent discoveries that have been made in this area.

This talk is focused on both students and researchers. “It helps to understand the evolutionary processes that occur in some groups of organisms”, concludes Talita Ferreira. On the other hand, she also emphasizes the importance of students being in contact with foreign researchers for a diverse and quality training.

Those people who have not been able to attend the talk can see the recording of the full presentation in Youtube.
