Peace and memory through the legacy of Robert Capa

The URJC is participating in a festival that pays homage to the figure and work of the couple of photojournalists Endre Ernö Friedmann and Gerda Taro, which will run until the end of December in Madrid with exhibitions, talks and screenings.

The Spanish Civil War and the city of Madrid are especially linked to the beginnings of the professional careers of Endre Ernö Friedmann and Gerta Pohorylle, whose photographic work is known internationally under the pseudonyms of Robert Capa and Gerda Taro, respectively.

Both used to sign their images under the common name of Robert Capa and his work and legacy marked a turning point in the visual history of the XNUMXth century and in the way of portraying war conflicts. The Robert Capa Festival was here It intends to honor the figure and work of both photographers, in addition to claiming values ​​such as peace, memory, worker heritage and social equality.

From November 7 to December 20, the city of Madrid hosts twenty activities including exhibitions, conferences, colloquiums, projections, murals and performing arts within the framework of the third edition of the festival. This year, under the title 'Legacies', the event centers all its activities around the importance of the heritage received and that marks the individual, social and cultural identity of today.

An event that, according to its organizers, unites past and present, culture and values, center and periphery, through the universal language of Capa's photography. An artistic language that allows international dialogues to build common projects, despite the differences.

The festival is directed by Miguel Sánchez-Moñita, Tomás Zarza, professors from the Rey Juan Carlos University and Uría Fernández, director of the Cultural and Documentary Department of the Anastasio de Gracia Foundation. The inauguration was carried out by the coordinator of the Degree in Fine Arts at the URJC, Raquel Sardá, on November 7 from building number 10 on Peironcely Street, the setting in which Capa portrayed some of his best-known images during the War. Civil.

The URJC, present in numerous activities

The Rey Juan Carlos University, through professors and students, participates in various actions of the festival. On the one hand, the exhibits 'The memory in the margins' at the Ateneo de Madrid; 'The Legacy of the Imaginary Woman', in the Women's Space Madrid (EMMA); 'Rearguard Chronicles', at the AISGE Foundation and 'Displacement 3.0', at the Julián Besteiro Foundation.

Seminars and colloquiums will also be held as 'The Empire of Fiction' at the Madrid-Argüelles headquarters of the URJC, with the presence of Ana Teresa Ortega, National Photography Prize, the international artist Francesc Torres, the researcher Ana María Guasch and the Portuguese curator and researcher, Ana Catarina Pinho, among others.
