The student association Ecotopía organizes a conference that will address the possibilities of this chemical element in the transition towards a more sustainable energy model.

In recent years, the possibility of using hydrogen to decarbonise production processes and sectors in order to carry out an energy transition towards a model free of carbon emissions has been pointed out.

With the aim of making known what role this element can play in the future of energy, the association of students interested in energy and environmental issues, Ecotopía, has organized the conference 'Hydrogen and sustainability', which will be held this coming Monday in Lecture Hall I on the Móstoles campus.

For this, an event has been planned with three presentations in which the topic of hydrogen will be dealt with from different points of view. On the one hand, the CIEMAT researcher, Marta Meroño, will discuss the properties and myths surrounding this element. On the other hand, the URJC professor, Javier Dufour, will address the sustainable nature of hydrogen from various perspectives: environmental, economic and social. The session will be closed by the professor of the Chemical Engineering Area, David Alique, who, in this case, will deal with a more technical issue such as the role of membranes in hydrogen purification processes.

From Ecotopía, the student of the Double Degree in Environmental Engineering and Chemical Engineering, Álvaro Palacios, moderator of the Conference, points out that the symposium “is designed to attract anyone interested in issues such as climate change or energy transition, especially students related to Environmental Engineering, but also from other areas or the general public”.

The day will be face-to-face and registrations have been completed until reaching the 72 attendees allowed due to health restrictions. 0 ECTS will be awarded for attendance.

The Ecotopía association is the URJC student group that brings together all those students who are interested in and concerned about climate and environmental issues.

Since its foundation, they have organized different conferences and activities with the idea of creating awareness and knowledge about the fight against climate change. After an important work of diffusion in the last days of welcome, the association already adds more than 50 members. “It is always said that young people have to lead the energy transition and we, from Ecotopía, try to raise awareness,” says Álvaro Palacios. And, they are on it, organizing conferences like this and others on the electricity market or the climate summit, trips like the one they made last year to the Monfragüe National Park or different field trips to the Madrid mountains.
