On the occasion of the recent entry into force of Law 8/21, which reforms civil and procedural legislation to support people with disabilities in the exercise of their legal capacity, the State Attorney General's Office has prepared a series of guides in easy-to-read format, validated by students of the Rey Juan Carlos University.

The students of the Legal Assistant University Extension Course have been in charge of reviewing and testing the effective ease of understanding of the texts in order to guarantee better access for people with intellectual disabilities to the field of justice.

Marta Albert, director of the course taught by the URJC and the Esfera Foundation, explains that the Prosecutor's Office contacted them so that the students could validate the text in easy reading. This format is an instrument of communicative accessibility that eliminates barriers of understanding for people with disabilities.

“Our students took an official validators course that accredits them to review these texts. His job has been to check whether the documents comply with the regulations of using short sentences, without subordinates or avoiding the subjunctive mood in verbs, among others”, explains the teacher.

In addition, as Albert assures, this reading format "not only benefits people with intellectual disabilities, but also the elderly or migrants who do not understand the language well." The texts are published on the website of the State Attorney General's Office and can be consulted through this link.

A course to expand opportunities

The URJC and Fundación Esfera University Extension Course for Legal Assistants is aimed at people with intellectual disabilities who wish to acquire knowledge in legal matters and can access important jobs in society.

The objective of the degree is to train and create quality employment for people with intellectual disabilities in a university environment. The students have a university recognition to favor their future inclusion in the work environment as legal disseminators and trainers, and as support staff in the tasks of a law firm or legal consultancy.
