The Rey Juan Carlos University, through its Development Cooperation and Volunteering Service, has delivered a total of 110 laptops to the Official University of Mbujimayi, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, thanks to a cooperation agreement between both institutions .

With this donation, the African institution reinforces and guarantees students quality computer learning that combines practice and theory. According to Miguel Ángel del Río, head of the Development Cooperation and Volunteering Service, the collaborative relationship between the two universities dates back four years, when the rector of the Congolese university at the time explained the poor conditions and shortcomings with which they worked:

“There they were giving computer studies theoretically. I have seen teachers draw the Windows desktop on a blackboard,” she says. Already in 2018, the URJC made a first delivery of equipment in collaboration with the manufacturer of the computers. At that time, the Official University of Mbujimayi was renovating the network electronics and the head of the Cooperation Service himself went there to install it.

The university still needed more computers, so this new installment was approved by the Vice-Rector for Strategic Planning and the Vice-Rector for Digitization of the URJC. For his part, the rector, Abbé Appolinaire Cibaka Cikongo, deeply thanked the URJC for its collaboration, as well as other institutions such as the Order of Malta and the Presidency of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which have allowed the exemption of import taxes for avoid large expenses for the reception of the equipment.

URJC 2030: Strengthen international collaboration between universities

This action, like many others, is framed within the URJC-2030 Strategic Plan to promote and align efforts of the university community around the 17 SDGs. The head of the Cooperation Service, Miguel Angel del Río, reflects on the importance of carrying out these cooperation measures with other institutions:

“This type of alliance promotes quality education thanks to the work of each institution in what corresponds to it. In our case, that of an academic institution, we have provided resources that are completely lacking there and are essential to develop their study and research work”, he concludes.
