Young talent for the Emptied Spain

A plan in which the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and the URJC collaborate, will allow students to train in companies located in municipalities with fewer than 5.000 inhabitants.

Newsroom

When we talk about the Empty Spain we refer to those parts of our country that have been losing inhabitants due to different factors such as the concentration of the population in cities and economic and structural policies. This has meant that little by little these parts have been losing job opportunities, services and infrastructure.

The Rey Juan Carlos University and the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge have launched the Rural Campus program for undergraduate and master's students to reside for three months in rural areas to encourage future graduates to consider working in that environment.

Fernando García Muiña, Vice-Rector for Innovation, Transfer and Relations with Companies, points out that "the signing of this agreement opens up new possibilities for external internships for our students in environments that may not be too well known, but which can lead to learning contexts of great value, both technical like human. In addition, it allows the firm commitment of the URJC to materialize with the social and economic development of our environment, and especially of that which needs greater support, as is the case of the rural environment”.

The branches of these training practices are very diverse, from Arts and Humanities, Social and Legal Sciences, through Sciences, Health Sciences, Engineering and Architecture. Students will be required to reside in the municipality of this training course in order to get to know it in depth and understand the rural environment as a place of opportunity.

“This is a pilot and different program that we understand can bring great personal benefits to students who dare to try it, as it will allow them to leave their usual environment, and get to know other realities in depth, while contributing to growth economy of these territories, living and collaborating closely with their people”, comments Mª Paz Matesanz Fernández, Head of the Service/Externship and Employment Unit.
