The start of the second quarter has meant a new season in the world of competitive debate. As the world adjusts to the new normal, face-to-face tournaments are becoming more frequent again, both in Madrid and in other cities in Spain. Among the associations that most actively participate in this type of activity is the URJC Debate Club. Over the last few months, its partners have attended numerous competitions, becoming semi-finalists and runners-up in many of them.

Firstly, on February 25 and 26, the BP UCM Parliamentary Tournament took place, developed by the Complutense University of Madrid. In this, the couple that represented the URJC, made up of Delia García and Fernando Prieto, were proclaimed runners-up in the tournament, with Fernando becoming the second best rookie speaker. A week later, the BP Comunícate-UCM was also held, in which the team of Dária Efimova and Delia García reached the semifinals. In addition, both participants entered the list of best speakers of the tournament, occupying the fifth and seventh places respectively.

Outside of Madrid, from March 18 to 20, two other competitions took place: BP UB and BP Eurodirect. On the one hand, in Barcelona, the couple made up of Melany del Sol and Ana Cortés, reached the semifinals, with Ana being the third best rookie speaker. At the same time, another URJC team made up of Kenneth de los Santos and Fátima Abozied were proclaimed runners-up in the tournament in the novice category. In Córdoba, the couple represented by Jorge Ochaita and Julia Heras reached the final, becoming the fifth and seventh best speakers of the BP Eurodirect.

Finally, on March 25 and 26, the XNUMXst BP Mendel Parliamentary Tournament was held. In this competition, both couples that represented the URJC, formed by Jorge Ochaita and Delia García; and Fernando Prieto and Pablo Moro, have been proclaimed runners-up. In addition, Jorge Ochaita and Delia Garcia were proclaimed second and fourth best speaker of the tournament, respectively. In the words of Leyre Puyuelo, president of the URJC Debate Club: “It is very comforting to see how little by little we are making progress. From the inside, seeing that the most rookies are learning and growing and making an effort to do so is a source of pride. Not only that, but knowing that we are all growing together and we are representing the university in the best possible way at a national level”.

Beyond participating in different competitions, Club de Debate also launches its own projects related to public speaking and communication. It has not only organized the VII BP URJC Parliamentary Tournament last November, but also participates in the launch of the 12th edition of the World University Debate Championship in Spanish, or CMUDE. This competition, which will be attended by more than 500 people of 20 different nationalities, will be held at the Móstoles campus of the Rey Juan Carlos University from July 11 to 17.
