The URJC and COAM reveal the winning project for the new Vicálvaro Departmental Building

On May 5, the award ceremony for the contest took place in the Assembly Hall of the Madrid Campus. The "never walk alone" project emerged as the winner.

In 2019, the URJC Governing Council approved an infrastructure plan to modernize some of the buildings on the University campus. Among the most outstanding construction projects was the classroom-departmental building on the Madrid-Vicálvaro Campus. After the Dean of the FCJS, the Technical Office and the Rector detailed the needs of this building, in December 2020 an agreement was reached with the Official College of Architects of Madrid to hold an ideas contest to choose the final design. of the building.

“Ours is a large, diverse university that had grown a lot in recent years and the construction of new buildings and the modernization of our facilities was a strategic element to guarantee our future. It was, however, a task with very notable budgetary impacts and that required transversal collaboration, between the different services and actors of the URJC”, Antonio G. Marqués, delegate of the Rector for Policies of Excellence, stated during the ceremony. 

Of the multitude of applications received by the Rey Juan Carlos University and COAM, there were 15 projects that met all the requirements that were previously requested. Andante piano, BI-21012, Campus (not virtual), Cátedra 2.0, Of necessity, garden, Diagonal, The air I breathe, Estáporvenir, GoMotion, LocusLUDENS, Naos, never walk alone, Pecten, The corner and Tramaslas are the proposals finalists who have had to present a descriptive report and two panels. 

The idea of ​​never walk alone has been awarded during the event held in the Assembly Hall of the Madrid Campus. While the second prize and honorable mentions went to Campus (not virtual), NAOS, Estaporvenir and De lanecessidad, Jardín, respectively. 

Antonio G. Marqués, has defined the winning project as “a building that the students of this campus deserve, a building that the teaching staff of this campus deserve and, if you allow me, a building that the residents of the Vicálvaro neighborhood deserve. A meeting point for the university community, a versatile building that enhances our role of social transformation and a building that, ultimately, helps our university to be in a better position to face the challenges of education and research of the Century. XXI”.
