El student of Double Degree in Language and Literature and Journalism, William Alexander, has been the winner of the XXV edition of the Antonio Carvajal Award with his work The Nobodys.

William Alexander student of the Double Degree in Language and Literature and Journalism was presented to the XXV edition of the Antonio Carvajal Award, as did several dozen writers with their works from all over Spain and Latin America. In the words of the jury, all the works that were eligible for the award were: “of very high quality”.

El Young Poetry Award "Antonio Carvajal" is awarded annually by the Municipality of Albolote (Granada) to an unpublished collection of poems in Spanish language, written by a Spanish or Hispanic American author under the age of twenty-five. It is one of the most prestigious and relevant in the field of young poetry in the Spanish language, and the proof is that this year marks the 25th anniversary of its creation. It is also a tribute to Antonio Carvajal, born in Albolote, for his "relevant and prestigious poetic production", which has earned him the National Poetry Prize, among other awards. The edition of the winning book is carried out by Hyperion Editions.

The jury is made up of poets, writers and professors who value the work of the candidates. This year the ruling made public on June 29 in Albolote, and among the aspects that stood out from the winning work that is: "Poetry with lyrical roots, musically heir to that of his compatriot Rubén Darío, rooted in contemporary social reality, which the author knows very closely: emigration, poverty, uprooting, marginalization, bureaucratic obstacles, hard work, the real world, with his pressing and universal urgencies and needs, which does not seem to concern or interest other poets of his age". They were also struck by the author's mention of what is known as "Menas", stating: "A book that names those whom others call Menas, and does so with as much truth as beauty". In William's words, receiving this prize has been a surprise and a great joy: "I received the news with joy and I did not believe it. Later, when it was made public in the media, I assimilated it better. It is a very pleasant satisfaction that a work that gives a voice to the marginalized has been valued. Those beings that no one talks about. "

The reflection made by the author of his work is that “The Nobody, of course, is a clear reference to the famous text by Galeano that we find in The Book of Hugs. I conceive my collection of poems as a personal anthology whose poems are written from 2011 to 2016 - 2017 with their successes and failures. I didn't want to change anything, because if I had, I wouldn't have felt comfortable. The language is clear and, from my point of view, I think that an evolution of my relationship with the word is being noticed. It is difficult to talk about poems that were written more than a decade ago and that I had even abandoned completely..” The work is divided into 4 parts and “It is influenced by fully autobiographical experiences. His themes include: nostalgia for the homeland, emigration and, above all, the social: poverty, marginalization, crime in a marginal area of Madrid that I know first-hand, among others.. "

The book is scheduled to be released in late September or early October in Spain, although attempts are being made to have it published in Latin America and the US as well.
