After almost a year of preparations since the URJC Debate Club won the candidacy to host this event, starting Monday, more than 500 participants from 80 universities in Spain, Latin America and Europe will compete in Madrid to be the winning team of this World Debating Championship.
“It is the first post-pandemic face-to-face edition of the championship, the last being in Lima in 2019, which has been a challenge due to the uncertainty that it entails,” declares Jorge Ochaita, President of CMUDE Madrid 2022.
The inauguration will take place in the Móstoles assembly hall on Monday, July 11 at 15:00 p.m. It will be attended by the General Secretary of Universities, José Manuel Pingarrón; the Deputy Minister for Universities, Science and Innovation, of the Community of Madrid, Mr. Fidel Rodríguez Batalla and the General Director of Spanish in the World, Guillermo Escribano Manzano.
Three types of simultaneous competitions
Three synchronous championships will be held over five days: the main competition, speeches and masters. “Due to the plural and diverse nature of art and oratory, each category has its own characteristics and differentiated rules. In this way, they allow the participants to demonstrate their unique skills in completely different ways”, explains Dária Efimova, the general director of CMUDE Madrid 2022.
The main competition, or 'open' category, consists of debating motions in pairs on the most varied topics for nine rounds, until reaching the qualifying rounds. The Speech Championship is individual and consists of the creation of speeches on various topics with the intention of provoking feelings in the recipient. You need a lot of handling of oratory and persuasion. And, finally, the masters championship “inverts” the roles of the main competition, allowing the judges to debate.
The grand finale of CMUDE Madrid will take place on Sunday, July 17, at the Capitol Cinema. There, the winner of this edition of the Debate World Cup will be proclaimed, as well as the champions of the other categories, the best judge and the best speaker of the Championship.
But CMUDE MADRID 2022 is not just about debating, from the organization they propose multiple tourism, gastronomy and culture activities. One of them is the 'Night of Nations', a multicultural meeting in which the participants of the championship will be able to present the traditional food and music of their countries.
In addition, the participants have a free day to discover Madrid and on their Instagram they can find detailed guides so they don't miss anything.
The event has major sponsorships and collaborators, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Community of Madrid, Kreab. On the other hand, Iberia has provided discounts for participants who need to catch a plane and Alsa has done the same so that the teams can get to Madrid by bus. The list of collaborating entities is completed with the Mahou and San Miguel brands.
