Analysis of the evolution of human rights since Nuremberg

The state of fundamental rights in Europe is the subject of a Congress that is being held this Monday on the Madrid campus. The Polish artist and activist Alexandra Zinzuk will intervene from the border with Ukraine.

The Nuremberg trials, in which a large part of the Nazi German hierarchy were put in the dock and convicted of war crimes, serve as a starting point for Congress 'The evolution of Human Rights in the EU since Nuremberg'.

This symposium, as its organizer comments, the professor of the History of Law and Institutions Area, Covadonga Torres Assiego, aims to “raise awareness about Human Rights from a multidisciplinary perspective: health, feminist, humanitarian. A global vision”.

To this end, among other speakers, the congress will include the participation of the Polish activist Aleksandra Zinzuk, who promotes the culture of peace through art and will intervene from the border with Ukraine, a place where respect for Human Rights is in question.

In addition, topics such as the influence of the Nazi crimes judged in Nuremberg in medicine, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU or the relationship between the values ​​of the EU, Human Rights and their cultural context will be discussed. In addition, the new challenges facing the protection of women in the European Union and the current state of Human Rights in the continent will be addressed.

In this sense, and asked about the fit of countries such as Poland and Hungary in an EU that claims to be the international guarantor of Human Rights, Professor Covadonga Torres, who spent a month in Poland as part of her thesis, points out “ that the EU should intervene more firmly in the matter of Human Rights in that country and put the cards on the table in relation to what is happening in Ukraine and also with regard to Hungary”.

In addition to the aforementioned issues, the situation of Human Rights in Iran will also be addressed, a country that is experiencing a wave of mobilizations in protest at the death of a young woman at the hands of the police.

There will also be a round table in which the issues discussed will be debated and there will be space for a question time from the public. For attending the Congress, 0,3 ECTS Credits will be awarded.
