The 'La Hackoneta' team, made up of several students of various degrees from the Rey Juan Carlos University and other educational centers, has won second place in this state cybersecurity competition organized by the Civil Guard.

In a final held at the end of November, the team made up of students from the URJC, the University of Vigo and the Palcam FP Institute, took second place, just a few points behind the first. The winner was the 'Scavenger' team, made up of students from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, the Public University of Navarra and the University of Murcia.

The event took place in Madrid and consisted of a series of multidisciplinary challenges, ranging from legal to technical aspects. The challenges were unlocked (as in video games) as others were solved and points were obtained for each of them.

The tests were structured into a series of categories: forensic investigation of a security incident, 'hacking' drones, 'lockpicking' (gaining access to systems), strongholding of networks and the development of privacy and cookie policies.

Stress and group work

The members of 'La Hackoneta', Inés Martín (URJC Cybersecurity), Mohamed Ribii (URJC Master's Degree in Law), Isaac Rodríguez (Offensive CS Automation Engineer), Marina Villalta (CS Engineering student at the Rey Juan Carlos University) and Cristina Lourido (CS Consultant at Red Team), experienced the test under a lot of stress, but at the same time it was a lot of fun, “thanks to our good organization we managed to get a good result. In addition to the technical part, we were able to talk with the mentors and other participants, which was very enriching and entertaining”, according to Inés Martín. To which, Isaac Rodríguez adds that, “after the event we were able to enjoy the employability fair where we spoke with many companies that offered job opportunities. Without a doubt, it is a very enriching event”.

As the runner-up team, in addition to being recognized by the organizers and collaborating companies and an accrediting diploma, the team won, for each of its members, an Iphone14 mobile phone.

For the members of 'La Hackoneta', participating in this final has been an opportunity to test everything they have learned in class and in their first professional experiences. Mohamed Ribii also highlighted that, from a legal point of view, these have been complicated challenges because "we had to advise companies on certain matters, such as managing a data leak by following the legally established procedure. However, we were able to complete the required tests.” For her part, Marina Villalta, has indicated that "she has given us a lot of professional experience in the field of cybersecurity". To which Cristina Lourido adds that "this type of event allows us to test ourselves against challenges that we are not initially familiar with, here the skills learned previously and the ability to adapt come into play".

In addition to the competition, the final phase of the IV National CyberleagueGC also included various conferences on topics related to current events in the cybersecurity sector.

An event that revealed, again (winners in 2020 y finalists in 2019), the high level of the students and the qualifications related to computer security of the URJC.
