On June 16, on the Fuenlabrada campus (Grades Hall. 10:00 a.m.), the 'III Conference on Values for leadership: the role of older people in today's society' will take place.

The event will feature four presentations by specialists structured around two panels and a moderated discussion forum. Different experts in branches such as philosophy, law, medicine or economics will address issues such as what economic role older people play in society, what legal-labour measures for active aging are currently in force, how to protect people's dignity elderly in the final stage of life, or what medical care they require.

As Professor Aránzazu Hervás, organizer of the conference and main researcher of the project, points out, “with this last conference we want to emphasize the importance of our elders. The university has to make known the value that these people have for everything they contribute to us”.

Leadership from service to others

The conference marks the end of the research 'University and Civic Leadership: preserving fragility' promoted by the URJC and the Esther Koplowitz Foundation. The project, which started about a year ago, has carried out various training initiatives on the transformative capacity of volunteering.

Thus, activities have been carried out at the Collado Villalba nursing home, at the NIDO Association residence for people with cerebral palsy, as well as various training courses for teachers focused on civic leadership.

As Aránzazu Hervás explains, “civic leadership has nothing to do with commanding, but with serving others. The civic leader is the one who helps and the one who guides. It is a leadership with social commitment. This type of leadership adds Hervás, "must be encouraged from the initial phases of education and should be present in all areas of life", "the Esther Koplowitz Foundation and its founder have served as a paradigm of civic leadership in the project. Encouraging, asking, supporting and being behind”. The professor and researcher thanked both the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Miguel Ángel Esparza, and the vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Transfer, Fernando García Muiña, for their support throughout the project.

The conclusions of the project and of the investigations carried out in it will be presented in the near future at the International Congress on Education and Organization of Educational Institutions, which is held in Oviedo in November.
