Scientists take the floor at the URJC

Last week the VIII Conference of Women in Science and Engineering at the Rey Juan Carlos University took place.

Engineers and women of science from academia and industry were the protagonists of a few days in which they could learn about the projects and research in which they are immersed and how they develop their careers in a world, a priori, of men.

The event, which took place on Friday, September 22 at the Móstoles campus, brought together a total of 9 speakers who reflected on the role of women in these fields and presented the initiatives they are currently working on.

There was participation from speakers from the Rey Juan Carlos University and from outside the institution. “They have been very enjoyable and interesting days that have generated a rich debate between speakers and students,” says Beatriz Romero Herrero, Professor in the area of ​​Electronic Technology at the URJC, and director of the days.

On behalf of the institution, teachers Silvia Matesanz García, from the Biodiversity and Conservation Area, participated; Azucena Bello Fernández, professor of the master's degree in Industrial Engineering and director of the association of nuclear energy disseminators, Nuclear Youth and María Linares Serrano, professor in the area of ​​Chemical Engineering. In addition, María Najarro de la Parra, director of the URJC 2030 project, also participated.

Guest speakers included Coralía Pino, head of the Energy Efficiency and Sustainability area and the Training area of ​​the Hotel Technology Institute; Esther Cámara Bello, director of the Renewable Energy area of ​​Iberdrola; Edith Guedella Bustamante, head of Sustainability at Acciona Construction; María José Terrón López, professor of Electronic Technology and disseminator of women in science through her Instagram profile @conCieMcia_ and Zoe Seoane, founder and CEO of ZoeTech SL, an R&D company for 'new wearables' and smart fabrics. Some of these speakers belong to the association 'Women Action Sustainability', made up of women whose main objective is to elevate sustainability to the first strategic level of companies, entities and institutions.

WomenScienceEngineeringInsideOKAt the end of each of the presentations, topics were discussed ranging from how a biologist's career develops in the construction area to an entertaining and educational vision of the uses and realities of Nuclear Energy, including making the project known. strategic URJC2030 of the Rey Juan Carlos University, among others, small debates were held that aroused the interest of the attendees.

“We have regained part of the audience that we lost during the pandemic,” says Beatriz Romero, satisfied with how this edition has gone.

An opportunity to learn first about successful careers of women in STEM fields and to find new references for the following generations of engineers and scientists.
