The Rey Juan Carlos University, a pioneer in efficient energy management in the field of Public Administrations, is the only Spanish public university to have the UNE-EN ISO 50.001 Energy Management System certification since 2014, when was obtained for the first time. With this renewal, it thus strengthens its leadership and commitment to sustainability.

The Energy Management System has been audited this year 2023 by AENOR, being a strategic tool that allows the monitoring and reduction of energy consumption to achieve a sustainable future. The campuses of Mostoles, Fuenlabrada and Alcorcón have been evaluated within the system. These represent more than 75% of the university's total energy consumption, thus guaranteeing that the majority of the energy consumed is managed efficiently, in addition to providing solutions that promote continuous improvement with the consequent greater energy savings. energy and economic year after year. Elements that strengthen the University's commitment to sustainability and that allow it to continue contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) within the 2030 Agenda.

Rubén Rodríguez García, head of the Energy Efficiency Unit (UNEFE), which depends on the area of ​​Students, Social Projection and Sustainability, has indicated that, “in addition to carrying out efficient management of energy use, improvement actions are being implemented that will reduce consumption, such as the migration of the climate control system to a much more advanced and intelligent one, the massive replacement of fluorescent technology lighting with LED technology, self-consumption photovoltaic installations in some of the buildings and other projects that are in study and preparation.”

The vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Transfer, Fernando Enrique García Muiña, participated in the audit carried out by AENOR, as a representative of the university's senior management, thus showing the importance that these types of initiatives have for the URJC. Maribel Blázquez López, director of the new area of ​​Students, Social Projection and Sustainability, also took part.

The revalidation of this certificate represents a boost to the work of the URJC as a whole, in its commitment to sustainability and, specifically, to the work of the Energy Efficiency Unit, Maintenance Service and other University services that collaborate. in efficient energy management.
