The Rey Juan Carlos University awards Gregorio Marañón Bertrán de lis as an Honoris Causa doctor before a packed Rectorate assembly hall.

In his investiture speech, Marañón mainly reviewed his period of greatest political commitment, during the years of the Transition, in which he had a prominent role from his university years to his participation in the formation of the Democratic Center Union. Citing himself remembering an editorial in the university magazine Fibra, which he directed, he pointed out that at that time he was part of “a generation of transition to a new world.”

Evoking the spirit of that time, the new doctor Honoris Causa has asked to “recover the lost consensus” to address challenges such as those presented by issues such as constitutional reform, the territorial framework, education or public health.

Gregorio Marañón Bertrán de lis has focused a large part of his speech on reviewing in detail the history of the Teatro Real, an institution that he has presided over since 2007. In this review he has highlighted that the institution has managed to go from irrelevance to excellence, offering quality culture for an increasingly wider audience.

The honoree has shown his gratitude to the University for having been proposed and awarded an Honoris Causa doctorate.

The value of the humanities

The rector, Javier Ramos, wanted to highlight, through the figure of Gregorio Marañón, the importance of the humanities in a time of technological change.

Ramos has pointed out that “there is no consistent scientific discourse without deep cultural roots. Universities must reaffirm ourselves in the task of generating, transmitting and applying knowledge. That is why we are a preferred space for the expansion of the humanities.”

Ramos has also commented that the adjective liberal adapts perfectly to the figure and career of the new Doctor Honoris Causa from the URJC, highlighting his commitment, his tolerant and open character and his defense of culture and has affirmed the need for there to be “more wills like yours” to achieve consensus in today's Spain.

A multifaceted life

For her part, the dean of the Faculty of Legal Sciences and Politics, María Enciso Alonso-Muñumer, gave a brief review of the career of Gregorio Marañón Bertrán de lis, focusing on his multifaceted character. From being a man of law to political militancy and the fight for democracy, passing through his role at the head of important companies and financial entities and his constant commitment to culture in the broadest sense of the word, exemplified in the role of president. of the Teatro Real, a position he currently holds. In her speech, Enciso also praised the role of Pilar Solís, wife of the new doctor Honoris Causa.

The event was attended by the Minister of Culture and Sports, Ernest Urtasun; the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, Félix Bolaños and the ambassadors of Italy, Japan and China in Spain; Francisco Serrano, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports of the Community of Madrid, as well as Manuel Bautista, mayor of Móstoles. In addition, former ministers from the governments of Rajoy, Zapatero, Aznar and González have attended, as well as former presidents of the Congress of Deputies, members of the aristocracy, businessmen, diplomats and directors of the Royal Academies of Fine Arts.
